Strange how Barclaycard issue a Amex card but cannot process a balance transfer :S

Because the Amex they issue is not a charge card, that's the difference. The Barclaycard issued Amex is a credit card which has 16 digits like a normal card, it's only the Amex charge card which has 15 digits and the difference being a charge card you have to clear the amount you spend every month, not like a credit card where the balance rolls over if you don't pay it.

No it doesn't, all Amex cards are 15 digits, charge or credit, Amex issued or MBNA/Barclaycard issued (and, I assume, Lloyds/TSB). The Visa it's paired with has a 16 digit number, as do all Visa cards, but that's irrelevant.

I stand corrected - I just checked my partner's Barclaycard Amex and it is indeed 15 digits :o

OP - I have done a test balance transfer using Santander 123 card and Amex Gold charge card, will let you know if successful or not.
