we are off on holiday this saturday and flying with thompson - we have not paid for seats together and I will not pay for them, if I get them great, if not, then some other person is going to have to sit next to my kids ;-)

Its an option - pay and you will be very close, probably side by side.

Dont pay - you might not be.

    Choices - choices LOL

If its a sepcial holiday/honeymoon I would pay it to be on the safe side. Tjink how cheap you would feel if you didn't and you were split up by 10 rows or more sat next to a smelly chuncky monkey overspilling into your seat!

I know we didn't pay extra to choose the seats we wanted, but you do wonder what is the point of spending time picking the seat you want, only to be moved once you check in!

Aircraft changes do happen sometimes...we always book scheduled airlines and always select our seats when we book (usually very early on and so we have a very nice selection), then check them regularly, then check in online when it opens both on the way out and back (we normally have a laptop with us). Not sure if it's true but we were told by someone at a Virgin check-in desk that it's almost impossible for them to move you once you have checked in online. Of course it may still happen if there is a last minute aircraft change - but ultimately the seats are never guaranteed until you're sat in them. :)
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

And not even then - I have been on aircraft before where they have asked passengers to change seats once everyone has boarded and settled - in this case it was so a family that had been split up could sit next to each other - of course no-one was willing to move and it all became very nasty.

You won't be doing much flying on charter airlines then!
Or B.A for that matter. they charge to pre select seats unless you have status
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

I cant really see the point,

Mrs Alias will be travelling soon with 3x children, all under the age of 7.

I would really like them to put the 2yr old at the front, the 6yr old at the back and the baby on her knee, then watch them both flock back to mum during taxi/take-off run.

Not our problem, its the airlines problem. They know the ages, so should plan seating ahead accordingly.

I thought the way it worked now with BA was that you can pay to pick your seat any time between booking and 24 hours before takeoff when the on-line check in opens. Once this on-line check in has opened, you can log on and pick your seats free of charge as before.

    Have I got that correct?

Probably "worth" doing if you want a specific seat - e.g. the emergency exits, but not worth doing if you simply want to sit next to each other as only 45% of BA passengers check in online anyway.

(Not that I fly with BA these days as I want to spend my holiday at the airport whilst their employees are on strike).

Exactly, why would they want to create this problem?

Also, what happens in an emergency if a young child is sat on their own away from the parent?
If you're going to stalk me, while you're at it can you cut the grass, feed the dog & make sure I've got bread & milk in :D

I didn't think legally and health and safety wise they could sit a minor without a parent.
