Actually Emily Thornberry gave a very good coherent description of Labours position on brexit on the Sunday Politics this Sunday.

So were those other Labour luminaries lying, or just so incompetent they don't understand the Labour position?

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2017/oct/09/brexit-mps-angry-as-theresa-may-accepts-continuing-rule-of-eu-court I think how you see something depends on where you are coming from in the first place. The difference between the Tory and Labour position is that it's a matter of principle and ideals for many in the tory party. Such people want a hard brexit no matter what the consequences...........Whereas Labour wants a jobs first brexit which protects workers and their rights. There are disagreements within Labour as to whether we should remain in the single market etc after a 2-3 year period of implementation but these are nothing compared to the disagreements between the tory wings. Surely the main issue now is that we are on course for a hard brexit with no trade agreement in place. No one in Labour wants this but the tory hard right do. For the tories our relationship with Europe is an existential issue. It's no accident that the EU is responsible for the resignation of three tory PM's ....Thatcher, Major and Cameron.

Really. You weren't watching the same thing as me.
BBC Host SKEWERS Labour Emily Thornberry over party’s single market stance

BBC presenter Sarah Smith grilled Labour frontbencher Emily Thornberry for failing to clarify the Labour party's position on single market membership after Brexit
BBC Sunday Politics host Sarah Smith attacked Ms Thornberry after Shadow foreign secretary demanded "more clarity' on the Government's Brexit strategy.
Ms Smith pointed out that Labour had also failed to be forthcoming over its plans for the single market.
She said: "Hang on! You’re asking for the UK Government to provide all sorts of clarity on details while at the same time you won’t tell us whether you want to stay in the single market after we’ve left the EU, stay in the customs union after we’ve left the EU.
"I mean, these are not fine details, they’re basic points of principle. You have consistently said you will or will not stay in the single market."
Mrs Thornberry said she found the line of questioning "annoying", claiming Labour had long established its position on the single market since the Brexit vote.

Are you saying there are no hard brexiters in Labour Party. As a remain voting ex Labour voter from where I'm sitting both Labour and Tories are split on brexit as is the general public. The Lib Dems and SNP want to reverse brexit although they phrase it a different way. Also I think many if not all of the Labour voters who returned from UKIP want a hard brexit.

A "Jobs first Brexit" is a deliberately vague expression designed to mean all things to all men.

    Does it mean "more jobs"?
    Does it mean "better jobs"?
Does it mean "higher paying jobs"
Does it mean "jobs with more protections for employees"

It certainly can't mean all of them because some directly conflict the others.

So as with all things Corbyn, it's a meaningless & deliberately vague phrase without a shred of any tangible meaning behind it.

The answer is we need to get a deal as close as we can to what the single market offers.

True this is what we're stuck with at present:-

    http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/theresa-may-second-eu-referendum-brexit-refuses-to-say-how-vote-remain-leave-a7993456.html

She can't think on her feet, once she has to go off the prepared script she is all at sea. The EU negotiators are taking her to the cleaners by simply stalling the negotiations. Sadly it was all so predictable..... How she answered that question must be rather demoralising for Leavers.......and very slowly they are beginning to look deflated. The longer this goes on, the more obvious it becomes that Leavers only know what they don’t want and have no consensus on what they do want.
