How do I find out what speed I'm truly getting via fibreoptic BB?
Speed test use something like speedtest.net over Ethernet not wifi .
>and if sign up with another company will they need to fit another cable at huge expense?
Depends if BT OpenReach supply your area . Put your post code in the checker stickied top of the page .

Question please, I don't understand Virgin Media contracts:
If I agreed to a 12 month contract in return for a discounted price which was for 18 months, so for example if the contract period was 15 November 18 to 14 November 19 with the discounted price applicable for the 18 months to 14 May 2020 then does that mean I could give notice and leave after the initial 12 months (14 November 19)?
This was a deal for TV and Broadband and Line Rental.

For any company if you agree a minimum term of 12 months then you can give 30 days notice to leave at month 11. Your discounts will carry on for the remaining 6 months if you don't give notice obviously.
Are you sure it's not the other way round? 12 months discount for an 18 month contract, that is more common.0 -

It's quite common with Virgin IME.
I've had quite a few "loyalty discounts" that have been applied with a lifetime of 18 months, on a new 12 month contract.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. I usually spend hours researching prices and negotiating when it comes to the end of a contract but today it's taken me a 5 min call to VM retention's and I'm reasonably happy with the outcome.
I currently pay £35 per month for 100mb cable BB and basic TV and box plus landline (which we don't really use but handy to have).
I got a letter saying that it was going up to £38 for a month and then up to £58 for the next year.
So I phoned up and said I didn't want to pay more and would look elsewhere and they immediately said they would give another contract starting from now at £37 per year PLUS £30 credit. So overall that works out at £34.50 per month for next 12 months.
My thoughts are that it's slightly cheaper than the previous contract so that's got to be a plus without going through hours of holding on the phone and getting different prices.
It felt wrong that I didn't keep pushing for a better deal or getting other prices but at vthe same time look at the time and inconvenience (and stress) I've saved and also cheaper than previous. I'm calling it a WIN !0 -
Just rang them out of boredom, just stated i wanted to cancel as my latest bill with loyalty discounts was £43.50!!!!
I have 100Mb and phone line (it's 50p MORE not to have it..lol)
Put through to cancellations, just stated i wanted to cancel as the price was to high and i want to go with Sky for £34 month with TV and 75Mb (i made this up).
She came back with £33 month for 6 months and £35 for other 6 months. So back down to £34.
I only did it as i was bored and seen the email..lol0 -
I phoned up because of the price rise.
I was told I can't be offered any deals because I'm still in a discounted term.....10 1/2 months into a 12 month contract .....so I shall call back in a couple of weeks and see what they offer.
I don't really want to leave0 -
Cancelled on 16th Sept. Got a call on the way home yesterday, 17th saying there was no way they could match the current deal I am on (same deal for the last 2 years), and then rushed off the call! A very brief conversation. I will keep waiting and walk if needed, and will update here.
Last year I cancelled and got a call a week or so later and matched my current offer immediately.0 -
I am on a fairly basic package with Virgin
M100 Fibre Broadband, Talk Weekends and TV Player.
Was on a 12-month contract at £29 pm. Its now jumped to £52 on a rolling monthly contract.
I called customer services and asked for any promotions and discounts . I was told that the best they can do was £51 for 6-months then £54 - not sure how thats better.
I left it there to consider my options and review MSE.
What would you advise my next step be and how to frame it? Ask for cancellation/retention (are they the same department?). I think the closest alternative is Sky at £34 pm."enough is a feast"...old Buddist proverb0 -
Has your contract expired ? I was facing a price hike until I phoned once my contract has expired. They then managed to find a better deal. You're only young once, but you can be immature forever0
