I ordered the following new title through my library yesterday. It's a Reader's Digest one and it's called Extraordinary Uses for Ordinary Objects and the blurb says it gives you 2000 uses for 200 everyday household objects and the bit I liked was that it claimed to save you money:D It may be rubbish but hey ho only 40p wasted if so!

Most libraries allow you to ask for books to be bought and added to the catalogue.
I've never been refused a book so far and usually it takes about 2 weeks.
It just ocurred to me that if we all asked for our libraries to have certain 'OS' style books then we would save on having to buy the books and also obvisouly make them available to others.

I am going to ask my library to get:
Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day
    Sink refelctions
    Tightwad Gazettes
    The Laurel Robertson Bread Book
    ...(thinking up others)

    Any suggestions welcome!

I know some libraries try inter-library loans instead of buying books (which is great) but it's still worth asking.

I have had the odd refusal - but, by and large, they will buy the books I request. Interlibrary loans - - the expensive county I live in even the library gets in on the act and charges more for everything than virtually everywhere else in the country!- so I have to want to read (as opposed to own) a book rather a lot to pay their interlibrary loan rate.

(Often suspect the books they do buy in because of my request are because a lot of my local librarians have similar interests to me - I often see a little slip in books when they come indicating that a librarian has put in a reservation for the book next - as one of them said to me once "Oooo...you DO read such interesting books"....:D)

No charges in our local library - maybe we are one of the lucky local authorities.

Don't forget that 2008 is National Year of Reading.....and if any library is struggling to locate an interlibrary-loan book, the British Library has them all. Literally. (sorry about the pun!)
  • Our library used to charge 75p to reserve a book, which I used to think was very good value, but now its free! Sometimes in the papers they review a book that I like the look of, so I log onto my online library account, see if they have it and if they do then I reserve it! I didn't know you can ask them to buy in books though - I will have to investigate that one!

One little tip if you do have an online library account - I have a wish list set up on Amazon, but I don't use it to buy books! I add books to it that I fancy reading sometime (maybe I have read about some recommended books in the paper or a magazine), and then when I need a new book from the library I have a look at my Amazon wishlist to see what I have fancied reading in the past and see if the library have it. You can even add comments on the wishlist - helps you keep track of what you have read and if you have enjoyed it! I currently have over 100 books in my wishlist that I am slowly working my way through!!
