You could equally say a lot of UK people are stupid for thinking they need to change their car before 100k miles often due to poor maintenance and servicing

Most cars are easily capable of running 200k miles plus if they are properly serviced on regular basis. Unfortunately in the UK the general car consumer has a perception that any car >100k miles is shot and not worth it
  • you could say people are paranoid and go to the extent of buying oil testing kits , when a manufacturer has specified the correct oil and given a suggested change interval ,

Correct, I may have been fooled but I wanted to conduct a one time only exercise to monitor the condition of my oil so I know in future how often it should be changed. I used Castrol Edge FST Titnaium 5W40 oil that meets the VW 505 01 spec and this is the oil used if you are NOT on the long life service regime but the annual one. Judging from the result my oil is in fact in top condition and could in theory be used for at least another 6 months.

If the test result yielded poor quality oil, I would have known to change my oil twice a year instead on the manufacturers recommendation of once a year. This may have been credit to Castrol but who knows?

A lot of Americans are also right into hand guns and blowing up foreign countries. Doesn't make them right just because they're American ;)

It doesn't make them wrong, either.

Top marks for the stupidest comment so far today.

No, I suspect that honour goes to your reply seeing as I didn't suggest that it did make them wrong. My point was only that "Americans do it" isn't, as suggested by Ranger, a logical endorsement of it. Nothing more, nothing less.

    UPDATE:

Just had my engine oil and gearbox oil changed today using Gulf Formula GVX 5w30 (VW 507 00 spec oil) and the Fuchs Sinofluid FE 75 (2.9 litres).

Engine feels the same but the gearbox, WOW, what a difference! The old gearbox oil was all gunky like tar and I'm not surprised considering its been there for nearly 200k miles. Gear changes now feel a lot more slick and smooth between changes..like a brand new! I should also expect a very slight bump in MPG as the transmission should run more efficiently with thew new oil.
