Forgot £ in self service checkout. Any advice please?

I know somebody who left £20 in the Asda one. Even though the next person was seen on CCTV scooping it out within 30 seconds .... there was nothing the store could do.0

I suspect the store may be unwilling to let you look at the CCTV anyway, citing 'data protection'.0

Give these people a call and they'll look into it for you https://www.fbi.gov/“Learn from the mistakes of others. You can never live long enough to make them all yourself.”

It's entirely legitimate to call the police and report it as a crime (a quick Google search shows a couple of police forces who specifically refer to it as a crime) - our local regional newspaper had a CCTV image of someone who took some cash left by another customer from a self-service machine a couple of months ago.
I'll try again at finding the link later but I've heard of several criminal actions over it, such as:

Although that is theft/dishonesty, and becomes a police matter.0 -

Especially as there is no way of knowing for sure if the person who took the money did so deliberately.
I know it's extremely unlikely but there is a small possibility that the next person using the checkout put in a large denomination note and simply picked up the extra tenner along with their change without realising it.0 -
If they'll get involved for shoplifters stealing items worth less than £10, I really don't see why this should be different.
Both show intent to permanently deprive. Theres no requirement for the owner to be known/identified in order for it to be theft. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -

Again theres some forethought to going to a shop and taking an item.
Finding a tenner in a machine is not the same. Yes its 'stealing' but so is picking up money you found on the floor.
As someone said, if they had put in a £20 they could have possibly assumed the £10 was part of their change, they'd be no more guilty of stealing than not checking what they were taking from the machine, same as the OP.0 -

For that to work they'd have to be utterly !!!!! at maths.
ie if your shopping comes to £17.56 and you put in £20 - it should be blatantly obvious to anyone over the age of 12 that you won't get £10 + back. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0
