£2k on a wedding would be very hard to do

Whilst it is only one day, and it is expensive, you cant spend your whole life watching the pennies, you have to live a bit

it is one day, but its a day of your life that will (hopefully) be one of the most significant you will have

You could do a wedding for much less than £2k if you put your minds to it, and if you had to. The fact is that a large proportion of the money spent at weddings is completely wasted on nonsense that few people would even notice.

I agree that you need to 'live a bit' but there are far better uses for money than wishing wells, favours, colour-co-ordinated chair covers and all the other nonsense that people get conned into thinking are essentials. Especially if you don't actually have that money to fritter away.

And yes, it is just one day. Fancy reflecting afterwards that you had just peed £20k away for a big party for people you hardly know. Not very MSE!

Apologies, I've not read the whole thread but the gist of it seems to be that the bride & groom want exclusive use of the hotel but are surprised that the hotel want payment for all the rooms if they are expected to turn other guests away and that the wedding is next year.
I have to be honest & say if I was running a hotel & someone asked for exclusive use I'd also expect them to pay for all the rooms otherwise I'd want the opportunity to advertise available rooms.
If the wedding isn't until next year depending when I'd suggest there is plenty of time to put invites out & ask guests to book a room if they want one. I doubt many people will be booking rooms 6 months + in advance unless there is something special about the location.

If I was a guest not connected to the wedding, I would expect the hotel to advise me when booking that there is a function going on and a lot of the hotel will be used by the private function. it may not put me off, but I would expect to be told.

    Hi
I'm a little confused in the original post the OP says that the hotel says "if they want exclusive use of all the bedrooms - which we do then we have to pay for them" but in a later post says they don't want or need exclusive use. So maybe you & the hotel are confused over what you want ?
I'd suggest a clear conversation with hotel saying what you do want. If you want exclusive use I.e. they don't accept guests not part of your wedding party then its not unreasonable for them to ask you to pay for them.
However if the wedding isn't until next year then there is plenty of time for those that want to stay to book a room.
I'm not sure Id expect a hotel to tell me if the hotel is booked up by a big event unless it's going to effect my stay eg no evening meals. You can usually tell hotels that are used as wedding venues from their websites & during the summer months you can pretty much guarantee there will be a wedding.
