I bought 2 cans last week from farm foods (the bigger size - 340g?), 2 for £3. That's the cheapest I've seen it since we it was a staple in our diet, 5 years ago, at 90p a tin from netto. Since then it's not ever been cheap enough to feature more than occasionally!0

Ye Olde Oak corned beef comes in an ordinary tin - so much easier to use a tin opener than the traditional key style opener.
So after Horsegate I prefer it from Brazil.
Ohh. I can also remember when Asda did their own Basic brand for 35p a can, a normal 340gram one.The more I live, the more I learn.
The more I learn, the more I grow.
The more I grow, the more I see.
The more I see, the more I know.
The more I know, the more I see,
How little I know.!!0 -
Yes, it's shot up in price in recent years. Corned beef was a staple 'treat' for the poorer people in years gone by.... now it's only for the rich.
All you can do really is jot down the price (£/100g) and keep an eye out everywhere for your nan - and snaffle a fist full if you ever see them cheap somewhere. I guess you know there's a B&M at St Austell now, although not cheap for corned beef (at £1.89 for 325g of Princes).0 -
I'm not well off but I still think the prices people are quoting are pretty cheap. Even at £2 per tin to feed 3 people seems pretty reasonable.0

Way back when it was cheaper, we had it imported from Argentina if I recall correctly. I think it shot up during and after the Falklands crises.:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A

During that war I knew somebody who was taken a prisoner of war. They couldn't work out what to do with them, so, having floated them round the Atlantic for some days trying to work out "what next" they put them in a camp that was like a holiday camp - and fed them steak every day. They told the prisoners that if they had to keep them longer they'd fill the swimming pool. (True story, although the prisoners weren't military, they were scientists).0 -
I've just emailed Princes and i'm waiting for a prepaid envelope to send the tin or corned beef and the contents back to them, it was very wrong. Like a rubber jelly running through it that was so tough you couldn't even break it up - rank. I normally like it.0

What meat can you buy that's less than £4.50 a kilo?0 -
I buy a tin now and again but as I live alone I buy the bigger one open it cut in half and freeze half ,that way my tin lasts a bit longer.
I can get a third of my half tin sliced and dipped in batter, fried up wit an egg and a sliced cold tomato.
Another third sliced thinly and used in a sandwich based meal at lunchtime, and the last third of a tin diced and tossed in either a salad or some pasta
So if I can buy a tin at £2.00 I can streetch it to six meals for me for a couple of quid. You can tell I grew up with rationingseriously its possible to make a meal out of very little.Sometimes my small portion will be used as a filler for a jacket spud with some grated cheese un top also. When streetching food out its the bits that go with it that help, lots of salad or vegetables pad out the meat or a small bowl of rice pud with a desert sppon of ice cream or dollop of jam pad out a small meal and fill you up.Or to be really OS back in the days of rationing pud would sometimes just be bread and jam
