reusing teats

I can remember that the silicone ones I used occassionally with my son had a cross on the top instead of a hole, and every now and again I would notice that a bit had come away making the flow too fast (maybe he bit a corner off- not sure!)0

How long can I use a teat before it needs replacement?
AVENT teats are made from silicone rubber. Since silicone does not wear out or change shape, the teats will need to be changed less often than latex teats. We recommend changing the teats in any event after 3 months use, for hygiene reasons. Always inspect the teats before use and throw away if damaged.

thx for all replies. I think I might shop around for some new ones. Personally I think £3 for 2 is a lot, lets assume I will need at least 6 of at least two flow rates, more likely 3, then thats £18 or £27 on teats alone.
Avent are bound to recommend frequent replacing, they want us to buy more. And they have us over a barrel as few if any other teats fit their stupid bottles.
I have no idea if silicon breaks down or not. I can't see that its unhygienic, sorry but that is a ridiculous statement if the things are sterilised which of course they have been. And I like to think I would notice if my baby suddenly swallowed the teat, and of course I wouldn't use them if they were split or had bits hanging off.
Anyway its not just the money, I hate the thought of filling the bin with so much plastic
The post about sterilising the mooncup made me laugh out loud :rotfl:Jan GC: £202.65/£450 (as of 4-1-12)

I KNow I'm late replying but I used the same teats and I mix fed both of my daughters so they didn't get half the wear and tear that they would have if they were solely bottle fed. Both of my girls seemfine to me - unless you're saying that in deterioration a teat can be harmful in which case why do they allow them toput them in their mouths at all.
