reusing teats

Had a conversation with some friends today who were shocked that I reused bottle teats from baby #1 for baby #2. Age gap was 18 months. All my friends chucked the original teats and bought new ones.

Well they were then uber horrified when I said I was going to use them again for my 3rd baby (due in a month). Age gap between #2 and #3 will be 2 3/4 years. They are Avent teats, look fine to me, obviously I will wash and sterilise them, so what does everyine think ? Is there a reason I can't or shouldn't reuse them ? I am hoping to breastfeed anyway but you never know how that will go.

  • I would be inclined to use the bottles but replace the teats as after a while plastics start to perish even if they look ok . Boots have 20% off all baby stuff at the minute so they work out at £3.19 a pack of 2 teats .
Baby Thomas born 3 months early by emergency section on 21/1/09 weighing 1lb 15ozs .
Thomas came home after 3 months and 2 days in hospital weighing 5lb 15ozs
    Thomas weighed 21lb 4ozs on his 1st birthday , a total weight gain of 18lbs 5ozs !
  • If they look fine they are fine like you said. As for 3.19 for two teats...words fail me

I'm not being rude though I'd probably have a heart attack at paying that much! I've seen the latex ones in Boots in the discount bit 3 for 20p.

Hopefully, you won't have to use them much anyway! Your hardly clueless about kids as you have to already so your not going to endanger your newborn by using a steralised teat! Who knows how long they've been in the packet for anyway!
  • I thougt you were supposed to replace teats every 3 months ?? I re-used my bottles.

I think it depends on how long you used the teats for each child, did they bite them at all, how did you wash them etc. They will start to have unseen ware on them. I wouldn't use the same teats for each child, but that's just me. I think they are such a cheap price to pay (if you look around) compared to everything else a baby uses, that I wouldn't hesitate in buying new ones.

Personally I used Boots own silicone free (4 pack for £1.99).

I have baby 3 due soon.

The only things we have replaced (or are not 2nd hand) are the cot matress, the car seat and the bottles/teats.

  • So your using teats that will be possibly 4 years old and been used over and over, sorry but thats unhygenic (sp) IMO

I fail to see how it is unhygenic, once sterlised they are as clean as when you buy them, if not cleaner, the teats I would be concerned about as over time the silicone will break down and result in them possibly splitting, last thing you want is baby swallowing part of a teat.
One day I might be more organised...........

  • I thought the official line on it is that dummies and teats should be chucked after a certain amount of time,
if you think they are fine then im sure they are...
    i wouldnt do it though
  • How long can I use a teat before it needs replacement?

AVENT teats are made from silicone rubber. Since silicone does not wear out or change shape, the teats will need to be changed less often than latex teats. We recommend changing the teats in any event after 3 months use, for hygiene reasons. Always inspect the teats before use and throw away if damaged.
