Satellite Broadband options in rural southern France.

A friend of mine has a house in a remote village in southern France. She has internet access via dial up only as broadband is not available in the village.

Is there a reasonably priced broadband via satellite service that she could use? She is only there for maybe 6 weeks per year so it is simply not worth investing more than a few hundred pounds. I googled and most options seem to be quite a lot more than that.

She has satellite TV installed. Can the dish be used or adapted to receive satellite broadband or would that require a dedicated dish?

Comments and advice would be appreciated. :)

Nope not a chance to get satellite connections for a few hundred, Laos of expensive equipment required and a hefty subscription.

A possible option would be to get together with someone close and see if they can get a dsl connection and share it tirelessly maybe. with large directional dishes yes you use 2 satellite dishes one at each end pointing at each other it is possible to transmit a wireless data signal a fair way if you have line of sight
  • Alternatively, does she have 3g mobile reception? A data subscription with a French mobile network may be the answer. I have found in Europe 3g coverage is generally excellent, even in remote areas.

Any 3g phone is capable of being used as a modem, and will give 1/2 mbps speed (more or less). A lot quicker than dial up, and in my experience fast enough for most surfing requirements.

However, some advice, only use a French mobile contract, not roaming on a UK network. Data costs on roaming are ludicrous, so she must shop around for a bundled deal, this may even be possible on a French PAYG basis.

  • Hi Avoriaz

Can I suggest you type the following into Google 'eutelsat satellite broadband consumer' and you'll be able to read several articles about it.

    Thanks for your responses. :)

I will pass on your suggestions. The 3G phone sounds a possibility.

France is very much more wired up than the UK apparently. Wait for a year and broadband may arrive in the village - also enquire if ISDN is available. This used to serve rural areas before ADSL was thought of and is still a good source of a reliable 128k connection for lots of people and companies, even more so in Europe than the UK.

Oh forgot to mention - install OnSpeed for £25/year it will make a dial up connection feel like broadband for everyday surfing speed (but not for downloads).

It would be better if you started your own thread as yours is a different question to the original.

Can you be more specific about the problem?

It would be helpful if you could put the phone number of the house into the Availability Checker at www.samknows.com and then click on BT ADSL and tell us what it says.
  • Thanks im sorry this is all new to me and i dont know how to post a new thread. Any advice? Originaly they said that there was a dax on the line? then they tried to have this removed, but after countless conversations to bt costing a small fortune and only speaking to some one who in all honestly really just could`t understand me, nothing was done. An engineer was sent but just said he could remove it, and that was really about it. Just find it so hard to believe that we cant as the our neighbours can just 100m away???

Thanks for any advice that be given, i run a business from the internet so i really need this sorted.

    Regards Julian
  • Just tried the availability checker and it said this:-

    BT ADSL broadband availability
You are connected to the Sketty telephone exchange.

lg_green.gifADSL is available in your arealg_green.gifYour exchange is also enabled for ADSL Max services
According to BT Wholesale, your line should be able to support a 0.5Mbps or greater ADSL connection.

    Standard ADSL RAG results:
lg_red.gif You cannot receive 2Mbps ADSLlg_red.gif You cannot receive 1Mbps ADSLlg_orange.gifYou may be able to receive 512Kbps ADSL
(Engineer visit likely)lg_orange.gifYou may be able to receive 256Kbps ADSL
    (Engineer visit likely)
You are approximately 3.58km from the exchange (straight line distance).

    Does this help?
    Hope so.

Easynet is unbundled on your exchange and may suit your business requirements. See here.
