Nothing to do with the OP (mother) 's career decisions - I was talking about yours!

You've done some low level media course, are unemployed after it and think that gives the the knowledge to encourage some immature youngster into taking the same route.

I find that totally irresponsible in an adult who should know better!

Oh. Nothing to do with mine either.

I did level 3. It's not that low and I could have gone on to uni, I've just never had any interest in doing so.

I'm unemployed because of personal issues. As I said before, it is NOTHING to do media.

I could have done ANY course. I'd still be unemployed right now.

My life, CV and personal reasons/issues have nothing to do with what OP son wants or can achieve. I have given information for various routes and options he - or any one else - could take and have advised the OP to discuss it more with her son to help motivate him and help him realise his goals for the future.

Plenty of people go down the media route and gain media jobs. He's certainly not going to ever stand a chance if he doesn't know the options and try to get somewhere.

This link is from January 2014:
    https://www.gov.uk/government/news/creative-industries-worth-8million-an-hour-to-uk-economy

    Goverment site.

"Official statistics published today reveal that the UK’s creative industries are now worth £71.4 billion per year to the UK economy."

"Creative Industries Groups are as follows
    • Advertising and marketing
    • Architecture
    • Crafts
    • Design: Product, Graphic and Fashion Design
    • Film, TV, video, radio and photography
    • IT, software and computer services
    • Publishing
    • Museums, Galleries and Libraries
    • Music, performing and visual arts"
    "

    • Growth of almost 10% in 2012, outperforming all other sectors of UK industry
    • Accounted for 1.68 million jobs in 2012, 5.6 per cent of UK jobs"
Basically it's showing that the media industry is massive and it just keeps growing.

    Also, http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-25742231

"The UK's prodigious film, television and music industries are a key part of the figures for both employment and overall value to the economy.
Other contributors that are included in the figures include museums and art galleries, architecture and photography."

So despite it being a massive industry that just keeps growing and that has helped people gain employment, you're telling me this kid is highly unlikely to get a job in media?

Doesn't look that way to me.

Yes, he'll have to do work and pass exams to get there. Yes, there is (as with other jobs) competition. No, he's not just going to magically get a job or magically get an amazing position. However, getting a job in media is a realistic goal.
  • I work in recruitment (albeit at the very senior end) for a global media/online business. All the senior leaders, globally, have stellar academic histories.

At a more junior level, including entry level, there's more wiggle room, but it is still very very competitive, and as a business, we can afford to be picky.

So - it pays to stand out, both academically, and in what you do outside of studying.

If someone is really motivated and a self-starter, they will almost certainly have started "playing around" with coding/setting up their own YouTube channel/blogging or whatever it is that floats their boat by 6th form (or whatever it is called these days). Is his Xbox obsession actually masking a deep-seated interest in getting into the gaming world? And if so, can he be persuaded to extend that interest into something more practical?

I don't think it hurts to remind a young person that to achieve anything in life they need to knuckle down and work for it - demotivating pah!

Agreed, but it is important to remind them that they can get somewhere.
