As it was mostly clothes and my spare laptop, books and a few other small things she said they were disposed in the bin which has now been emptied.

Well apparently there wasn't a laptop there when she was sorting out my items to throw away.

Hilly, doesn't it worry you that your 'spare' laptop has gone? In post 13 you stated that the cleaner had disagreed with your list of missing items - was the laptop one such item she said was not there when she 'cleaned'? What could have been taken/ retrieved from the laptop (id-wise; laptops are hackable, after all)? Was it 'connected' in any way to another laptop/ phone of yours? Of all the items to have been 'removed' this is one that could come back to bite you, if not now then some time in the future :(
Initially you mentioned food in the freezer, later sentimental items of personal if not financial value from family, a total of £800 worth of goods in all (but no insurance cover) and now a laptop....this is for real, I hope...? Apologies for apparent rudeness, but this is surely a police matter - ?

I can understand someone thinking frozen food had been left behind, but clothes, books and a laptop. Unbelievable.

You would think if the cleaner entered to clean on the hearsay of neighbours that you had left, once she saw all your stuff she would have second thoughts and contacted the agency.

I wonder if the agency is talking bull and actually asked her to clean the flat. They're just trying to sound like an innocent party.

You came home and all your stuff had gone, the agency has so far refused to compensate you for it (although you can'tbe compensated for sentimental items). Contact the police. They'll hopefully talk to the cleaner.

she claims there wasn't a laptop because if you came across an abandoned laptop in working order you'd probably keep it, anything that the cleaner claims wasn't there is probably in her posession. Can the police get a search warrant and search her home to see if she's got any of your items

Does your University have any law courses ?
I know it's still vacation time but only just and a friendly law lecturer may be willing to give you some decent advice or assistance.

Lecturers don't get the long holidays that students get.

Depends on the uni ...and plenty *can* work from home in vac time so aren't always around ...although I do think you might be confusing lecturers with uni admin staff - but as I said my experience of availability of academic staff at the universities I've attended/had connections with may be different to yours they aren't all the same. Either way this close to start of term it's a good option for advice for the OP.
