Then they were given a council house in Wales, they didn't suffer long term, my wife and her brother ended up with first class honours degrees (they couldn't speak English when they arrived here) and good careers. My wife thinks the same about the benefits system as I do, that it should only cover the basics (except for the disabled and sick).

....so you are saying that we should make social policy in this country based on your wifes views?

Where did I say that? I am saying that our opinions are as valid as yours. But lets just drop the whole thing I really can't be bothered to argue with the likes of you.Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one birdThe only time Chuck Norris was wrong was when he thought he had made a mistakeChuck Norris puts the "laughter" in "manslaughter".I've started running again, after several injuries had forced me to stop0 -
You really are something nothing in my post supports anybody just the concequencies of selling him the house at a discount. He may well have equity but if he doesnt work again it would soon disappear. To make it clear I'm not saying it's right that we support him just that that is what would happen. I take it your happier that he has £1500 a month of our money that £500.
Everything in your post is against selling social housing.
you ignore the huge benefits of getting rid of social housing and generate silly examples while ignoring the big picture.
You see the negatives in every situation0 -
Yes that's right Clapton....that's what I said with the rider.... management recongnised the importance of co-operation as well. It was a two way process and not just driven from the top!
I agree with that : UK was unfortunate having so many trade union leaders being communists or fellow travellers :
no-one can really negotiate with people whose repeated view is the overgrow of the state rather than how to make the company more success for the benefit of all0 -
Should Moby be grateful he wasn't born in Syria.?
Yes Moby you should, you should wake each morning and count your lucky stars that you were born and live in one of the greatest countries on earth.
My late mother, a war bride who came to the UK in 1949, used to say
"You British, you don't know you are born, you have everything and yet you still moan and whine".....
and before you say it she was not cushioned by piles of dosh......
When they were first married my parents were very poor, and as I grew up we lived from week to week, just scraping by. My parents worked Hard, lived frugally and gradually improved their situation.
I have travelled extensively and have lived abroad at times. Given the choice there is no other country where I would prefer to live.
Compared to many countries the UK really is a land of milk and honey.
If you Find the UK so disappointing and you think you can do better elsewhere - then the remedy is in your own hands.

So because we are born into a country that we are lucky to be born into we don't have the right to complain about things we see as wrong. It's a good job that we didn't take that attitude in the past because we wouldn't be in the position we are.
Of course we should complain if things are not up to scratch.
It is both our right And our duty to not only comlain but also to take action.
And yes....Ive done my share of marching, protesting. Drew the line at burning my bra though. :rotfl:0 -
I thought I had quite eloquently...... but those who think with their wallets, which I fully accept make up the majority on here, see things differently. Here's Owen Jones take on many of the issues:-

I was responding to the OP.Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0 -
Totally accept what you say but do you think because you could do it..... everybody could/should/ is in a position to? Is it really that simple for you? Besides I think the move from the workhouse to the welfare state was a great achievement of the left ...don't you......... and we should protect it wouldn't you agree?
Surely people come here looking for a better life and to escape places like Syria. Are you saying I should be grateful for the fact that I don't live in Syria?
You should get down on your knees in total gratitude you were not born into some Muslim hellhole where women are treated like property, or parts of Africa where grinding poverty and hunger are the norm, or a communist dictatorship where people would rather risk their lives fleeing than exist in a prison society. You really don't know how lucky you are to be alive at this time in this country.
Maybe that is the difference between right and left. A positive can-do attitude and belief in the ability of mankind to improve, opposed to a constant miserablism and negativity no matter how many good things there are available in life.Been away for a while.0
