It frustrates me how they can cover up an error and not be accountable for putting peoples financial status in jeapordy, and everyone here seems to think it's ok for them to do so.

No-one is siding with Tesco, we're just saying if there is nothing you can do to change their minds, then the only way to inform them that you won't tolerate being treated like that is to hit their bottom line which would be money and take your business elsewhere for another provider to benefit from your business.

I also agree with cake (great username btw :rotfl:) in that it looks like you are struggling with your budget/over-reliance on credit especially if this one decision has caused you be in a difficult financial position – please take the advice of heading over to the DFW board and posters will be able to help further.

  • I got the increased limit they promised me in an almost identical letter (except obviously the amounts involved). It had been applied to my account when I checked my balance earlier today. I guess the irony is, I neither needed nor particularly wanted this increase, but had no reason to contact them to refuse it.

If you are having to use credit to cover essentials then it sounds like you need help with your budget. Post a statement of affairs on the Debtfree Wannabe board and they'll be able to help.
  • i only wanted to know if anyone had or had not received the promised increase. Did not expect everyone to turn it back onto me. Oh well, i know where not to go for advise next time.

Simply thought i was helping by raising awareness of this issue created by Tesco Bank.

Good luck and sorry for opening this thread.

mjllanwales, It was worth posting to warn people and I'm sure at some point in the future, we will see the thread bought up again.

It's risking customer getting annoyed and closing their cards down, but I would imagine that it will be covered in their T&C's, that they have a right to withdraw/alter/adjust credit as and when they see fit, with little or in some cases no notice.

I've seen so many times on these forums, people mention how they were expecting money from various means, so did this, that and the other and then suddenly the expect money hasn't materialised for whatever reason.

Many, many years ago, this was a great forum to get non-judgemental advice. It's gone downhill, I'm afraid. Far too many people simply want to pass judgement rather than read and respond to the original post.

Don't worry about it. There are many other websites where people try, quite genuinely, to help.

    Best wishes.

I for one found it very useful to know. A while ago I received one of those letters advising they wanted to increase my limit. However I told them I did not require an increase and in future to take me out of auto increases
  • to be fair this looked like an error from the start as already said such an increase would have been unusual, rather than arguing the case on here and Facebook would be better spending time discussing with tesco maybe getting a smaller increase in limit?

I had a letter at the same time with the same date for the credit increase - august 12th. I checked yesterday and the limit increase had indeed been applied. Extra 3k stooze capacity.

I can't see anyone defending Tesco Bank but just people trying to help OP understand what might have been behind their apparently thoughtless action. I also don't get the bit about everyone being judgemental - to me the majority of replies were constructive and offered advice (complain but no real point in trying to contest, just check all CRAs, look more closely at debt situation, etc), but it does seem to me that OP has left themselves open to accusations of overreacting in terms of some of the hyperbole, bearing in mind that what Tesco have effectively done is return OP back to where they were last month in terms of the amount of credit available in future:
Tesco Bank have left me in a very difficult position
putting peoples financial status in jeapordy
I for one am out of pocket by a good amount
i only wanted to know if anyone had or had not received the promised increase.
Well, not really, you already knew that many were in the same boat from Facebook but were seeking advice on whether there were grounds to challenge them for withdrawing their offer. Don't take it personally that the answer isn't the one you wanted to hear!
