Broadband only working in one room

We have a bundled package from sky (TV, phone and broadband), but the broadband is very weak or non existent outside the room which the router is in, which is not the same room as the sky box so our search is often limited, and downloading takes forever

I have been on with sky and they first tried to flog me fibreoptic which I was later told would never have solved the problem. A later operator got me to change the channels several times which did not solve the problem. I have also tried a signal booster, a different router, our neighbours router and nothing makes any difference. Our router works fine in a neighbours house.

Our neighbours have sky in their house (built at the same time but bigger house), and have the router even further apart and have no problems (we don't live in a massive house or anything).

It is as if something in our house is stopping the sky wifi signal going through walls, yet we can pick up our other neighbours virgin from next door (identical house built at the same time)!

Sky have said that they do not provide a higher powered router, and there is no point in cancelling as this broadband is "free" for the first 12 months as part of our bundled offer. We are outside of the cancellation period and do not wish to cancel the whole bundle anyway as we have been with sky in a previous house for years and like the TV service.

Is there any way to get the signal to extend outside the room? Sky's only suggestion now is that I look at installing Virgin after my 12 month contract is up!

Thanks in advance!

Sky are responsible for getting a signal to your router, not for delivering it around the house. If you have solid masonry or stone walls, or foil-faced plasterboard, then that could be a factor-what sort of house is it?
A pair of Homeplugs (as above) will otherwise do the job.
All your tests indicate that there is no fault with the router, so the most likely cause is still a channel clash. Have you used inSSIDer to find the least used channel?

Thanks, I'll have a look at that, do I just plug one in with the router and one in the TV room?

Hi, it's just a brick built house, identically built to our neighbours who have wifi in their house. In fact we can pick up their wifi in our house but sometimes not our own.

yes, plug one into the router and then the lan cable from the other to the sky box

I do this (athough I've added a wireless access point to push the signal all the way to the back of the house )

Could be you are on a congested wifi channel .
Change channels turn router around/ reposition may help.

Yep, do what JJ Egan says before spending any money.
If you have an Android phone, there's an app called WiFi Analyzer (yes, with a 'z') that will show you what WiFi channels are in use around you, and it'll even suggest the 'cleanest' channel for you to use. Take the router off auto mode and set that channel.
And the general advice - try to have the router in the middle of the house, away from metal.

post some stats, changing channels randomly can exacerbate the problem

    http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/wireless_network_view.html

power saving, drivers, location, interference from electrical wireless equipment, leaky microwaves, wireless cctv, etc can all affect it.

Some routers have a Smart Wifi setting that scans and changes channels .
    Worth turning it off .
