Sky broadband unexplainable usage

So, my parents have a limit of 2gb on their sky broadband, which is fine as they are extremely light users - between Jan and June the most they used, according to the usage tool, was 1.36gb so they never get near 2gb as they do only very light browsing. Now, somehow in July it shot up to 3.5gb and in August's billing period to date (8th - today) they've apparently used 2.1gb, in 4 days!!
They've barely used it so there is something wrong, but I've no idea what. Their phones aren't connected to it, mine hasn't been and there's only one laptop in the household. All I can think is someone is hacking in somehow and rinsing their usage. I've changed passwords for them but I'm no techie so that's as far as my tech support goes.
Help! How the hell is this level of usage possible with the same light browsing as the previous 6 months?

2GB is absolutely nothing. In fact it's a pathetic excuse to even call it a 'limit'... Just a little web browsing and streaming a few videos, whether it's from YouTube, a news article or whatever, will rinse that limit dry.
The web over time is becoming more and more media-rich, so it's not surprising if the websites they visit are consuming more bandwidth.
I suggest it's time to upgrade to a real broadband package, the vast majority these days offer 'unlimited' packages anyway.0 -

I agree. But how can it have gone from 1.36gb in June to 3.5gb in July for the exact same usage? 2gb in 4 days when they've hardly had it on.
But yes, they are changing provider to an unlimited package, in the very near future.0 -
