Virgin mobile.....charging whilst in turkey

Ok your views pls
I'm in turkey right now on holiday, I have a virgin mobile and a text I received says incoming calls are free..

Due to a bit of a emergency at home, have been using the phone quite a bit....BUT people in the UK have been calling me so I assume the calls would be free.

However this appears not to be the case, my phone has been cut off due to me exceeding my credit limit of £75 pounds....virgin have been charging me .75p for all incoming calls....

This they say is a fault somewhere and will be "sorted soon". So I've had to pay 75 pounds to get my account back in credit and usable and I appear still to be building up a bill every time someone calls me.

All I get out of virginmobile is that it will be fixed ASAP and that any extra payments I make will just be credit on my account for future months

And advice pls

Receiving a call in Turkey should be free for you - it's the outgoing calls that are charged at 75ppm.
Bit of a poor show by Virgin though really if that's all that they are saying about the matter.
I guess you'll need to keep paying until you get back and are able to sort it out with them when you're no longer roaming.

Just looked on the Virgin website, thinking that all 'roaming' calls are expensive and it turns out that indeed incoming calls are free

    Turkey ServiceCost
Making a Call 75p (per minute)
Recieving a Call 0p (per minute)
    Sending an SMS 25p
    Sending an MMS 40p
    Data 50p (per MB)

I don't think that's correct and maybe where the problem is.
You should be paying for receiving calls whilst roaming abroad.

Most likely you are right, but even if this is incorrect, it's their problem, not their customers'.

Should? Is this a general statement?
Three and Sainsbury's don't charge for incoming calls in many countries, although Turkey isn't one of them. Even Sainsbury's, famous for their low roaming costs, charge 7p.

Were talking Virgin and Turkey however out of interest ......

How much does EE charge to receive calls in Turkey ?
How much does Giff Gaff charge to receive calls in Turkey ?
How much does Three charge for receiving calls in Turkey ?

It was obvious what I thought.
This sounded like a general statement - at least because there were no proofs that Virgin should charge. Hence the question.

Why are you asking this? I thought I made it clear by saying "Even Sainsbury's..." (after checking both Sainsbury's and Three). I am sure you checked Three too and could have posted yourself how much they charge.

It was a general statement as most networks charge for receiving calls abroad, as it happens Virgin also say they charge ... http://store.virginmedia.com/discover/mobile/using-your-mobile/abroad.html
    What you pay for:
You’ll pay to receive calls, as well as make them.
Friends in the UK will pay the standard UK rate to call you.

Because I fail to see why you are quoting Sainsbury and Three when it doesn't make a difference to the OP being as it's Virgin and outside the EU.
Roaming in Turkey is expensive and attracts large billing charges from most networks.

"General" and "most" are incompatible terms.

    • First I quote Sainsbury's and Three to make point that your statement was incorrect as a general one.
    • Then I quote Sainsbury's alone to confirm that most likely you were right when saying that the information on Virgin website and in their text was incorrect.
    What you pay for:
You’ll pay to receive calls, as well as make them.
Friends in the UK will pay the standard UK rate to call you.
This neither proves nor disproves anything in context of this thread as (at least) in EU Virgin customers don't pay for receiving calls (I didn't know this, and this doesn't look like an error) despite EE and giffgaff customers paying for this.

Sainsbury's and Three do charge for Turkey so what's the point of quoting them.
What's the point in quoting Sainsbury's alone ?

Since when did Turkey become part of the EU ?

    Edit to add ...
I wonder if voicemail is on and if there are charges ?
