No, but you have the comfort of knowing that you could if you had to - don't underestimate the value of that.

I don't see why you wouldn't count it? It's money they've given to you, albeit for a specific purpose (and a positive one at that). If it hadn't been available and you needed finance you would have had to get a loan, which is what the vast majority of other people would have had to do. Again, don't underestimate the value of it.

Sorry Alex, don't mean to have a go at you, but you are in a very privileged position compared to most people.

SMS - sorry for hijack, gave a good day and hope your pupils are ALL well behaved :T.

I don't count it because it's business money and tied up in my company, although I do see your point.

Its not without sacrifices Alex, dh earns ok money as he has spent the last 28 years working his way from apprentice to owner, for many years working seven days a week. It has meant we are now in a house just about big enough near great schools, so the kids have a better future.

My parents are also pretty well off (even though they do spend a lot of it! ) and GG is right, it's a security blanket, if something terrible happens and I could not afford to feed the kids or pay the gas bill I could ask them for a loan , I never have, but its not the same at all as many people who only have themselves and/or their partners to rely on.

Shs I can't comment on the detatched house as I have never lived in one, it does sound nice though! Have a relaxing weekend.

Different people place importance on different things and derive satisfaction from different things, that has been my point from my first post on this topic. At no point would I choose more money off the mortgage over time with my son but some find the sacrifice of working 7 days per week for more money than they'd have if they worked less acceptable. I know from my own experiences that expensive schools cannot really make up for parents choosing to be absent from concerts and sporting events and sending a child to someone else during the time not spent at school.

    Hi Pavlovs.
I am glad you are getting some balance.

I DO have a large capacity wm 11 or 13 kilos.
I am a bit rubbish at training the smalls.

We are doing two weeks' shopping at a time.

Sorry to hijack again shs :o

We couldn't afford childcare for three kids born within 3 years Alex, Dh worked long hours so I could stay at home. I used to work weekends for £30 a day , but then dh was offered work at over double the rate. The money was not to op the mortgage, it was to buy food (cheap food) and pay the bills, during this time if dh had chosen to put him spending time with the kids when he wanted to above work, we would have lost our home.

He also went to long lengths to be there at parents evenings, shows etc. Often starting at 2 or 3 am so he could leave early. Somtimes people who are working very hard are doing it because they love their kids so much, not because they don't care.

Shs get those smalls trained! Learn by my mistakes, my lot are a allergic to housework :rotfl:

SHS, have you read Your Money or Your Life? I bet your real hourly wage seems a lot less pretty after petrol and actual hours worked. I say this not to chide, but to reinforce what you already know, some sort of change might prove beneficial :)
  • I don't *think* so Ed but I will.
I do know that mortgage + fuel to work + union subs+ childcare = my salary give or take a hundred quid.
Oddly I have just asked the same of an ex MSEr
  • Can I confess I enjoy my busy crazy life.. I think my work / study ethic is good for my children as they seem us strive to be the best we can. The challenge is carving in the quality time.

NG: You clearly cannot see my point of view on this. I do not think it healthy to be all work and no play.

Ed: I've not read the book but salaried workers definitely are working for less than they think in a lot of cases.

Smallholding: Do have a nice weekend. Have you maybe thought about getting a cleaner for the house, send the ironing away and a full livery package for the pony? It would hopefully give you both some time.

  • Well Alex, no one in this house irons much, I HAVE a cleaner/dogsitter (in fact there's the rest of my salary) and I wouldn't dream of sending the Plops to boarding school. Couldn't afford it anyway!

I should say I did the time and motion thing to see where I was wasting time not as a whinge, though it might've sounded like that.

Helen I Love the way you summed it up.

Now Alex, Pirelli Cinturato all season or Uniroyal

Alex, GG has also tried to get you to see a different viewpoint. I'm sure everyone agrees with you that its not healthy to be all work and no play. NG is making the point about working long hours for *basic* bills to be met - its not healthy to lose your home, either.

Erm, I'm wondering if thats a joke, given the discussion between you, GG and NG, whether or not SHS could afford it. Excuse me if its not a joke, and you were being serious :rotfl:
