SHS, at the moment, I'd be really wary of a semi - when you're in a detached, you tend to forget the noises that can come through the wall, unless you spend *lots* on soundproofing. My neighbour currently plays odd sounding, random music till about 1am, in the bedroom. They have 3 Alsatians, which bark. Its not good. One of the reasons I'm now looking forward to retiring is that I can move a bed into my counselling room, which is the room with no party wall, so I'll sleep tons better.2023: the year I get to buy a car0

My alternative is only getting involved in things I'm interested in. Cannot see the point in working many hours for nothing other than the money. Personally, money is very low on my list of priorities when I consider whether or not I'll participate in a particular job, task or business.
It's not working for the money though Alex , its for a roof over the family's head and food for the children, which for me is a very high priority. What else can you do? Most people are not in the position where they can pick and choose what they fancy.
I have scrubbed other peoples toilets and floors over the years and although perhaps not my first choice of job at the time, I felt glad to be doing it and being able to help pay for what they needed. There is a great feeling of satisfaction in that, sorry but not much beats the feeling of independance.MFW 67 - Finally mortgage free! 💙😁0 -

Totally agree, ng, on both highlighted points. Both OH and myself lived in council housing (my mum bought a house when I was in my teens and still has a (albeit small - <£5k) mortgage. We've had no inheritances, no help with deposits, no family loans- not even any furniture donated when we first bought a house. Don't get me wrong - I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with that - hell, I hope to be able to help out all of my children to some extent:D - but we know that what we've got we have achieved by our own hard work and determination. (I don't think that the £6.73 in my dad's account when he died really counts as an inheritance lol!:rotfl:)
Anyway, we're on a countdown to half term here, so goodness knows what it's like in shs's house!! (Although I can guess a bit - my sister and her OH are both secondary teachers (and he's also Head of VIth Form))
Semis - not sure I'd go back to one - loved our last house which was one, but had great neighbours. A lot depends on your neighbours in that instance - that, and the quality of the house build - you could hear next door unplug / plug in things through the living room wall in our first house!:rotfl: (and as for the bedroom......:o:eek::D)

Well it doesn't look like we will get the chance to make that mistake. All looking a lot hopeless on the selling front.
Totally depressed.0 -
Greent what you have acheived is amazing, not easily done with a big family and you should be so proud
Sorry its not going well shs, fingers crossed it won't be too much longer before you get a buyer.MFW 67 - Finally mortgage free! 💙😁0 -
shs - hang on in there - like ng says, hopefully a buyer will emerge soon

Days are hectic aren't they. I feel massive guilt at the moment as I feel I'm rushing my kids to school as I have a full working day ahead and trying to get jobs don't before work etc. My day doesn't sound as busy as yours though SHS and I take my hat off to you.
Hope things pick up with your house, it's frustrating when nothing is happening isn't it. I've definitely been put off a semi though, we lived in a noisy mid terrace in our first house. Is it a big enough semi that feels like a detached though, if they are built 'hall to hall' at least the living areas aren't joined.June 2025 - part 1 - £19,145 part 2 - £21,973 Total - £41,118 29 months to go!0 -
No and one of the helpful things the agent said when he rang just now to tell me that (stupid woman who deserted her husband and kids and can't even afford our house) told him it was dreadful at school run time - not true - was that there is a second viewing on it so problem might be solved.0
