I have had an awful broadband experience with BT too. Took ages to cancel as getting through to anyone on the phone was impossible. We are with Virgin now and they have been very good. So frustrating when it all goes wrong. Fingers crossed it gets sorted.
Other useless organisations are the Dart charge gang and HMRC. Absolutely terrible communicators.Paid off mortgage nine years early in 2013. Now picking and choosing our work to fit in with the rest of our lives!
Still thrifty though, after all these years:D0 -
What makes me cross is someone vulnerable could be really freaked out by the threat of a six hundred quid cancellation fee.
Predicted to be back on next Thursday...maybe.0 -

They really could.
I have a story similar to the catalytic convertor one relating to Sky Broadband. Called to cancel as they were putting up our costs and spoke to a really patronising retentions agent who told me that 'nobody cancels for a few £'. I held my ground and said that I wanted to cancel. She then went on to say 'ok, but you will have to pay cancellation charges', to which my reply was 'oh really? Because I have a letter from you sitting in front of me that says 'you don't have to pay any cancellation charges' :rotfl:
Suspect that it takes a tenacious bully to work in retentions, bet that career attracts quite a few faux friendly sociopaths.0 -
I was with BT for years. At one point we were paying them £65 per month for internet and calls, it was one of the first things I decided to see if I could save money on. To cut a long story short, I negotiated a deal with BT for a further two years and have just moved to Sky (the irony) because BT couldn't match their deal (it was only £1.40 per month difference but Sky includes mobile numbers in their calls package, so in reality I'm saving about £10 per month). Anyhow, BT tried to charge for cancelling even though I was at the end of my contract and paid for line rental 12 months in advance. I refused and cancelled my direct debit with them and let a bill be sent.
The other recent one was British Gas (moved away from them as we could save £300 per year with a different company). They sent a bill based on our meter readings, we paid it only to get 4 confusing letters about either them owing us money or us owning them more money. Recently received a cheque through the post with a small refund but still cannot see how they can get this wrong when meter readings were taken?2018 totals:

Bullies is right Ed.
Alex I think you are like DH. He will not rest until they have provided the service we want.

I'm really loathe to change my comms providers, it seems so traumatic! Not doing too badly, though when I finish paid work I won't bother with a contract for the phone any more, just payg.2023: the year I get to buy a car0

smallholding: Happy new year and good luck for Monday.
You're right about me not resting until they've provided the right service. I really dislike the way big corporations (especially telecoms and utilities companies) seem to behave, for that reason I absolutely won't settle for what they tell me.
Have been known to call once, tell them I'll think about it and call an hour later to find out if someone else will give a better deal (they often do).
Car insurance is another one. I get a quote, tell them if they will agree to £X I'll deal. Works quite well for us as our insurance seems to be very cheap (could be all the cars though!).2018 totals:
