Name change issues after marriage- again!

This makes me fume. My goddaughter's name is Cassandra but she is known as Cassie. My mum wrote her a cheque for her birthday and when Cassie's mum tried to pay it in, the bank wouldn't accept it because it was made payable to Miss Cassie Surname rather then Miss Cassandra Surname. My mum had to write a new cheque.
I'll fetch this point up on the next baby naming thread when people think you should be named the 'formal' version of the name even if you are going to be known as the 'informal' version all your life.
Swingaloo- Before my husband's a/c was changed to a joint one, I had my child benefit paid into his account. I just got a letter pointing it out to me, that I was claiming but the money was going into a different named account and asking me if that was correct. This is around 15 years ago though.0 -
I am just throwing this out there. But does anyone recall the system of "endorsing" cheques on the back, you know, "pay X" or something like that.
Meant that the cheque made out to you did not go anywhere near your bank but was cashed or lodged by the person to whom it was endorsed.
If that system still exists (sorry haven't used cheques for donkey's years), then could the cheque be endorsed in favour of someone you trust who will either cash it or lodge it, and give you the money back?
I am probably thinking of something that happened in Dicken's time though and I may have forgotten some important detail!!
If it is possible, would save all the palaver of changing names and so forth.0 -

I don't think you can do that now because cheques are always (I think) crossed a/c payee only. - but I don't know the ins and outs of it.0 -
Thank you for hi-lighting this. My 15yo is known by a shortened version of his name and has done since he was a baby. This isn't an issue we've come across before, as I don't think anyone has every written out a cheque for him but I'll be more aware now and suggest they write it out to Initial Surname (thankfully they are the same, rather than a William known as Billy for example) if anyone is thinking of giving him a cheque.

I think the bank might have been a bit more pragamatic but Cassie's mum is not from the UK and so didn't know whether she could push them about it or not. I would have asked to speak to a senior staff member if it had been me. Hey ho!"If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0 -
Who is the cheque made out to?
Mr and Mrs Smith?
Or Mr Joe Smith and Mrs Jane Smith?
If the former, are his parents around, together and Mr and Mrs Smith with a joint account? Long shot I know!0 -

Both my kids (now in their 20s) use shortened versions of their name and have never had a problem paying in a cheque.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. When this happened to me I explained it to the bank who said bring us your marriage certificate and we will note on the account that you are Bouicca21 and also ANother name. I had to get senior person out from the back to agree to this masterpiece of common sense, but thereafter it was no problem.
That's exactly what I did although I had no problem in arranging it.0 -
Before I changed my bank account to reflect my married name my husband got given a cheque to Mr and Mrs Married name, he paid it into his account without any problems. We didn't need a joint account.0
