Name change issues after marriage- again!

I di have a previous thread about this some time ago but didn't want everyone reading to have to wade through to the end- so to my issue-

I didn't want to change my name after my marriage but a guest has given us a cheque to both of us in the married name.
We do have a joint account but its in both names so the bank will not accept the cheque as it does not have both surnames on.

The person who gave us the cheque is almost 90 years old and lives nearly 80 miles away so the suggestion that we get the cheque rewritten is a bit difficult. The only other option is to change the name on the account to reflect the married name.

But- I have 3 accounts with the bank and if I change one I will have to change them all. I have my work wage and my pension paid into one of the accounts.

The lady in the bank said that she cant see it being a problem if we change names on the account but not with my company I work for (I don't really want the hassle of changing everything at work and would prefer to stay in my current name)with my wage as they only use the sort code and account number.

However she did not seem sure as to if my pension would still go into the bank if I don't change my name with the DWP. I have just tried to call them to find out but there is a 25 minute wait on the phone at that moment.

I was told that if I change my name on the bank accounts then I should change on my passport and driving licence as well as the bank may ask to see them as proof of ID if I need to draw out a large sum.

So my question really is- If I change my name on my bank accounts will it have a knock on effect on anything else.? Than you for reading.

Open a joint account at a different bank in your maiden name, and then change the name on it and it will only be this account affected.

Once you have cashed the cheque you can close it down

It doesn't matter- I changed my bank name 3months before my work and other names and it's not been a problem, but then again my bank haven't refused cheques in New or old names either (or a mix!)

Open a joint savings account in an unrelated bank, pay the cheque in, withdraw it when it's cleared. Simple.

The dwp aren't informed when you change name on the account, only if the account number changes. You could also have it paid in to someone else's account if you had a good reason!

This makes me fume. My goddaughter's name is Cassandra but she is known as Cassie. My mum wrote her a cheque for her birthday and when Cassie's mum tried to pay it in, the bank wouldn't accept it because it was made payable to Miss Cassie Surname rather then Miss Cassandra Surname. My mum had to write a new cheque.

When this happened to me I explained it to the bank who said bring us your marriage certificate and we will note on the account that you are Bouicca21 and also ANother name. I had to get senior person out from the back to agree to this masterpiece of common sense, but thereafter it was no problem.

Alternatively you could try one of the high street cash chequeing places (not sure about their ID requirements).
There is a high fee for using these places

Thank you for the replies. I actually took my marriage certificate into the bank and they know us both. I didn't want the mess of opening an account at another bank as that's not even as simple as it used to be.

Im going to change my name on the bank accounts but just wanted clarification that if I do this I wont also have to change names with the DWP because of my pension. Im assuming they just use the sort code and account number. it just seems odd having a payment for D S**** going into an account named D W********

Can you change the account to your married name to pay the cheque in and then when it clears change it back to your maiden name.

Pay it in using the deposit facility on an ATM - very unlikely the discrepancy will be picked up.
