1st Diesel car - avoid supermarket fuel?

I have just bought a car that is my first diesel.

A Citroen C3 Picasso 1.6HDI Exclusive.
30K miles on a 61 plate.
Immaculate interior condition.
Very pleased with everything so far.

The dealer suggested avoiding supermarket fuel station diesel but to pay a little extra for premium quality brands (BP etc). How good is this advice?

Thanks

Not very good on my experience of 144K miles with a GM / Fiat diesel.

I run my 1.6 Hdi C4 Grand Picasso on supermarket fuel without problems, mainly Asda occasional Sainsburys or Morrisons.

    Others will disagree. ;)

"Premium" diesel you get at some forecourts usually has an additive in it similar to Redex. It helps it burn a little better and helps with keeping the injectors clean. The difference is possibly negligible but i've noticed less smoke and slightly better MPG with the Premium stuff from Esso or the likes vs Morrisons regular.

I always use supermarket fuel for my diesel car, and my other half, who is a chemist for an petrochemical company does the same and says it is fine (so who am I to argue:-) ).

"Premium" costs more so what is the actual cost for the better mpg?
  • With that engine fuel isn't the real problem but leaving engine oil in for too long is.
Forget the joke service schedule, change the engine oil with good quality full synthetic of the correct grade every year without fail, or half the recommended mileage whichever comes first.

The better fuels do have more goodies added, but a dash of Millers Diesel fuel additive should do the same job with standard fuels and at less overall cost...other snake oil if you feel this is so are available.
  • The main advice I would give is that you have to drive a diesel in a different way, they want to work at low revs and run out of steam at higher revs.

It depends on the set up but you shouldn't ever need to go beyond 3,000 revs and should be looking to stay much lower, letting the torque of the engine do the work. Unlike a petrol, noise from a diesel does not equal effort, and a good diesel accelerating hard within its comfort zone is quite quiet, whereas petrol engines tend to deliver performance at higher revs, especially modern ones which are often tuned to for economy at lower revs.

Avoid heavy throttle and this will avoid the engine producing soot and clogging up filters.

If you drive sympathetically, then it doesn't really matter what fuel you put in. If you drive it unsympathetically, you might find quality fuels will defer problems a bit.

How long do you plan to keep the car? If it's short term then chuck anything in it!
