Fistly, it's not over a phone and, as I added in my post above, customers aren't supposed to search.
    Secondly,

You’ll need to swap your SIM if:
    • You've changed or upgraded your phone and it needs a different size SIM (check our handy guide to see what SIM you need)
    • Your phone’s lost or stolen
    • Your SIM doesn't work
    None applies to this case.

How do we know whether he was told how to activate it or not ?

    Secondly .....
I received my PAYG sim in the post and thought nothing more of it.

They tell you when swapping to turn on the new sim and if it doesn't swap to keep both of them turned on until it does
If you don't how is the number going to transfer ?

The term porting comes from "number portability" .....to me that means portability of your phone number not only between networks but also between sims ....however if you wish and it keeps you happy we shall agree to call it transfer :rotfl:

Well I've not used the sim card and it was moved over to pay as you go. I asked for it to automatically switch to pay as you go when my contract ended but they said this isn't possible. Consequently I paid my remainder bills and closed my account and they sent me a pay as you go sim and switched me over. I wants to go pay as you go as I wanted to keep my number and stay with Vodafone (not the case anymore).

Not sure what you mean by porting but my account is now pay as you go and I've not activated the sim.

Is it PAYG with the same number and the same SIM?
What was the new SIM for then - that you apparently failed to activate?
  • I can't say I've had a simar experience as you but I have just had a really bad experience with Vodafone. Their customer service is shocking, I've just written a complaint letter to them, not sure how much good it'll do.
I hope everything works out for you in the end.

Did they say it wasn't possible to switch to payg without sending you a payg sim ? if so, it seems to me they were switching the number to the new sim.
It's probable as you didn't activate the sim the contract was left running and attracting charges whilst waiting for you to complete the process

Porting is the process of transferring the phone number most commonly between network sims but in this case between the contract sim and the payg sim.
When you say it's now payg are you certain of this ie. have you topped up, made calls or received calls recently ?

What was the outcome of this did you take Vodafone to small claims court?

I am in a very similar situation however they just kept loosing my Direct Debit details; I got blamed, my bank got blamed, they finally admitted it was Voda's fault and I wouldn't get a default, applied for mortgage and got rejected; had to apply for a higher rate and put down more cash.

Went to Ombudsmen, no joy the max they can offer is £100...doesn't even cover the mortgage application fee I had to pay or the extra interest I paying and loosing...completely screwed me over.

Plus Vodafone billing problems was in the news and all over the net Gogole: Vodafone billing system and look for the 'This Is money Link' even the Ombudsmen knows it and still only offered £100 compensation... I think the Ombudsmen are still controlled by the large giant Telcos or trying to meet SLA by closing down open complaints.

Too add salt to the wound it happened again in Aug 2016 and whilst I was wounded, when I gave my Credit Card numbers both Amex and Mastercard to a call representative in South Africa (I have that confirmed by scripts and staff IDs) my credit cards were scammed on a South African online store...must be coincidence as I never lost or gave my card details to anyone else and there is no 'hard proof'
