Currys & Sharp

We purchased a 42" Sharp LCD TV for £999.99 on 27th Feb this year from Currys. We also took out an extended warranty as the item was so expensive, this cost us £183.00 for the warranty. Yesterday the tv went wrong, it has a bright green tinge where shadowing is on the picture. It also keeps changing to the menu option and going through the settings by itself. We cannot watch it at all. Anyway, we rang currys warranty line yesteday and was told that it may need a software upgrade. IT'S LESS THAN 6 MONTHS OLD!!!!!!!!!!! The person we spoke to said someone would call us back tomorrow morning and arrange for an engineer to come out. - No call back. So at 4.55pm my partner rang again, he was transferred through to Sharp. They said someone would comeout on Wed next week, now in the paperwork it states that they guarantee an engineer within 2 days of your call. My partner aired his anger at this and was told by Sharp to ring Currys back. This he did and was told that if he rang the branch we purchased the tv from they would exchange it as it was less that 6 months old. So he rang the branch and they said "we can't do that we don't have any engineers that work from here" So they said they would ring the people at the warranty center again and ring back tomorrow morning. Now I am livid, it would've already been 48 hours since e reported it and no one seems to know who or what should be happening.
Has anyone had any experiences or got any views about what our next step should be if we don't get a call back??

Go to your local branch, explain the situation and ask them to call BAT line on your behalf. They should get you sorted asap, either engineer or swap out authorisation. Sharp will also be fined, and you may receive compensation.

Thanks for that. What is BAT line?? Sharp are saying they cannot be held responsible for the time limit Currys state in their policy and Currys have no right to promise a 2 day slot if they are going to pass the job onto them. The nearest Currys (where I purchased the item) is in excess of 30 miles from where I live so at the moment I can't manage to get through so everything has to be done by phone. It is so infuriating!!!

  • But Dave,

some people cant read books, and some people cannot socialise either. The OP may be new to the country (hence the username) and may not have friends either.

So, for some people the television is the only form of social interaction and to go without a television for two days is like being locked in dark room without a torch.

aussiebird, I hope you get a new television soon and can get on with watching those really fascinating television programs like Eastenders and Big brother and all those reality programs.

For your information I am not new to the country, my partner is Australian, hence Aussies bird DOH!!! Yes I can read and I do have friends but I dont pay £1000 for a tv for it to go wrong after less than 6 months and £180 for a warranty that states someone will be out within 2 days and yet here, 3 days later no one seem to want to take responsibility for who is going to do the repair. I have made nearly a dozen calls over the past 3 days and still no where near getting anyone to come out!!! So I think I have a right to be angry.
Now go crawl back under your stones lads!!

Would you pay almost £1200 for an item with extended warranty then sit back and happily relax while the shop and manufacturer bickered about whose fault it was or would you get angry and start arguing?

I just can't figure some people!!!!

No, no, no, Don't feed the trolls, just leave them be, it's nearly the end of the school holidays so they will have homework and after school clubs to occupy them in a few weeks. That along with their bedtimes being bought back to 7pm should see them posting less.

Under the sales of goods act the problem is Currys (the retailers) .. not Sharps (tha manufacturer). I would say that Currys are therefore in breach of contract. Having said that I am sure all they will do is stall until it suits them to sort it out.

Why let somthing so trivial make you angry?

I'm sure OP's telly will get fixed at somepoint in the very near future.
