Contraceptive Injection (depo) safe to stop?

I was due to have my depo injection done agaian today but totally forgot, I know I still have time to get it done but was wondering if its ok to just stop it and how this will effect my body?

I have been on it for a year now and to be honest do not need it for its main purpose as I'm not in a relationship. After re reading my info on it I thought that it might be good to give my body a break especially after the damage it can do to your bones, increase breast cancer ect.

Just wanted to know if anyone else had come off it and what effects this had on their body? My friend said her periods didn't return for 9 months and after that they were irratic. Any help appriciated. Im 23 if that helps

oh my word. i would go mental if i never had a period. As much as i hate feeling sick all the time, the cramps and everything else that goes with it i would go beserk if i never had one. Its like my health barometre, if anything is wrong with me my periods tell me about it.

Thats why i cant do the pill or anything like that, i hated having fake periods. I must be blimming mental.

My brothers wife was on that injection and she went all wiffy on it, her moods went mental and it nearly broke them up at one point and she came off it.

I had just 3 injections (running) and had to wait over a yr for my periods to return. I bloated up while on it and it's scary when you google the side effects

personally cos I havent yet had children and being 31 it was scary to see how long it took for my body to return to normal.
I refrained from hormone contrecption for a few months after they came back and am now back on the pill but am gonna take a break every couple of months so it doesnt build up so much in my system (( dont know if that will help))

hi i had it for a year and a bit i think and then just stopped. it took about a year to get a period and then they were a bit erratic but soon settled down again once they started coming. i also lost about two stone in six months after coming off it and stopped having mood swings! dont think it agreed with me tbh
  • I had two injections and then stopped, I didn't get a period for over 9 months. I went back on the pill and still didn't have a bleed  I was on the pill for 4 months before I started to get half a day of spotting in the pill free weeks. Another 6 months on from this and I decided to come off the pill all together... 8 weeks later and boy do I know about it... this past week (yes, a whole WEEK) has more than made up for the last 18 months of period/bleed free months... made me wish I'd never messed about in the first place!

I had the depo for many years, came off it to try for a baby and it toke me nearly 3 years to conceive.

My periods returned within 3 months, but it can stay in your system for up to 12 months i beleive.

    Hope that helps

  • well its been a year to the month and finally my period has returned after my last depo jab lol

  • I was on the depo for about 3yrs (with a 2 month break during) until last October when I started to bleed abnormally heavily (worse than post-birth! a night time towel didn't last an hour!! sorry if too much info!). It lasted several weeks, and was only stopped by coagullant (sp?) drugs from my GP. The GP refused to give me another depo, believing that it was a side-effect from my last jab.

I then went on to the mini-pill tablet, and have had regular periods ever since. I'll be stopping these soon tho' as OH has had the snip, and due to have his post-op tests any time now.

I must admit that all contraceptive drugs tend to make me feel more moody, and within 2 days of going on this new pill I felt the devils horns poking out the top of my head. It was the last straw for my OH after the bleeding episode, and volunteered to have a vasectomy.
One day the clocks will stop, and time won't mean a thing

Be nice to your children, they'll choose your care home
  • My older daughter was on the Depo for 3 years and has now been trying for a baby for the last 4 years with no joy at all. The gained several stones whilst on it and even now can't get rid of the weight.

My younger daughter also went on it but when she saw what it had done to her sister she came off after about a year. She is now having dreadfully heavy periods (like yours Sary) and has also put on nearly 3 stone which she's having to really struggle to lose.

I hate the idea that they've damaged their bodies and perhaps their chances of having babies in the future, but I've seen so many horror stories, I'm very afraid for them both.
I let my mind wander and it never came back!
