that's not work related though, that's a personal matter surely? you would have been contacted by other means

Being a personal tutor to students is part of my job and I only knew the student because of my job. Please explain why it isn't work related and how I would have been contacted through other means. What other means?

It's so important for work to be able to get hold of you, even when you're on holiday that they don't have your mobile number and even if they did you switch your phone off whilst you're on holiday? Meaning that you choose to take a tablet of laptop away on holiday with you so that you can sit and trawl your work emails?

What happened to one of Gloomendoom's students was a matter of life and death (sadly). That's a different kettle of fish to people who sit and deal with work that could easily (and should have been) delegated to someone else or left until they return from their holiday.

From your OP you clearly seem to think it's fine to sit and check your emails every day whilst away on holiday whilst I think it's totally unnecessary and we are never going to agree.

What actually happened as a result of you not checking your emails during your holiday? Did your staff manage to cope? Was the company still functioning?

I'm not really sure what you are asking.

Let me rephrase it for you.

You have previously said that work do not have your mobile number and even if they did you switch your phone off during your holidays. Yet at the same time it is so important for you to know what is happening at work whilst you're on holiday that you have to check your emails. If you don't have your phone switched on how do you check your emails? Do you pack a laptop or tablet?

If it so important for you keep in touch with work and for them to be able to contact you why do you have your phone switched off? Why do they not know your phone number?

Rather than a single, important phone call you would choose to trawl through your emails just on the off chance there's something life-or-death important in your inbox.

Yes, one, the other, or both for long trips.
If it so important for you keep in touch with work and for them to be able to contact you why do you have your phone switched off?

Because I check my work emails.
Why do they not know your phone number?

    See above.

Yes, in my experience, email via the internet is a lot more reliable than a mobile phone. I often have internet access but no phone signal at all. That may be due to where I choose to spend my holidays though.

In any case, my post was in response to post 52 that implied that, the prime minister excepted, no company should have any need to contact an employee (by any means) while that were away on a planned holiday. That is clearly not the case.
