Holiday V work email

  • Unless you're a transplant surgeon or involved in National Security I struggle to imagine what is important enough to interrupt your holiday. In my job I have come to redefine "urgent", as most requests claim to be but in reality aren't.

Nobody at work has my mobile number and they know I don't have a smartphone or home pc so don't read emails out of office hours. I meet all my deadlines and am often congratulated on my efficiency. I don't think it's healthy to be thinking about work every waking hour.

    I've been Money Tipped!
I do read them, then I mark unread and do nothing.

No and it's my business. If it's really, really critical, one of the managers will ring me.

I don't expect to bother someone whilst they are on holiday either.

I checked mine... until I got an email from my boss telling me to stop checking them.
Yup, mine would do the same!

I'm retired, so it's a moot point in my case. However, my DH leaves his work mobile and laptop at home when we go on holiday, and doesn't give it a thought.

Huge bone of contention between DH and I. I don't get my work emails on holiday. My manager knows my personal mobile number and could call me if there was a dire emergency. She's never yet contacted me.

I switch off from work. We've just come back from two weeks away. It takes me the first week to fully wind down. During the second, work really is at the back of my mind and personally I think it's good for you to get a break once a year!

DH's company is different and he's expected to check for urgent emails and respond if need be. It really winds me up. He is in a senior role so says it's normal, but I don't think it is. I've worked at companies where even the senior people are 'on holiday' when away! As others on here have said, in a serious emergency they could call him. I just don't think it's good for him as it means he can never really switch off from work. :(

I read mine every night on holiday and answer them. I am in a position where i only get emails to do something (not really copied in or any spam etc), so I might only get 20 a day, i sit ont he balcony with a glass of wine or whatever and maybe do an hours work. yes I know it's daft, but itls less strassful 'for me' than leaving them.
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....

I'm not paid enough to check my emails outside of working hours let alone on holiday
It's taken me years of experience to get this cynical

I don't check my emails on holiday. I set up my work email so that all emails received during my holiday are deleted. I put an out of office message on telling people:

    1) Their email has been deleted.

    2) Who to contact if it's urgent.

    3) Asking them to resend the email if it's important after I return.

    4) The date I'm back in the office.

You'd be surprised at how few emails are resent.

No I don't check them on holiday. Or in the evenings. I work to live, and I don't want them interrupting my/husband's time. I do not have a job that's so important it needs to come with me on holiday!
