Europcar - charged me for fuel!

Been using Europcar for years but this takes the biscuit....

Hired a car. Filled it back up after rental. Checked it was full.

Noticed on my next credit card bill they'd charged me £15. I rang them - took them a week to get back to me to tell me I'd "not filled the car up". I said nice try yes I did. They said no I didn't.

I KNOW I did. Yes its only £15 but a nice little scam they've got going on here. Wonder how many people don't notice/don't bother/don't push it afterwards?

Did they refund you? If not raise a chargeback claim on your card provider.

Did you brim it? (i.e. until the nozzle auto-stopped filling). Or did you get it "there or thereabouts" so the gauge looked full?

Nope. They are arguing with me that it was not full. Im also a bit annoyed that they took the money without even telling or sending an invoice.

And yes it was definitely full as you say and filled up 1/4 mile from home. Annoying thing is when they dropped it off it was ever so slightly below the full - I mentioned it and they came up some excuse but I let it go.

Easy con to do this though....

Show them the receipt from that time and date.

Unless the tank was completely empty before filling up, that will prove nothing.

Exactly, there is no way to prove that you completely filled the tank up. You are relying on the truthfullness of the person who checks to a certain extent.

Just raise a chargeback. For evidence use the receipt for fuel added and the mileage used during the period of hire. These should give a reasonable basis of proof that you returned the vehicle with a full tank.

Yep I will do. It was AMEX who are very good for things like this normally.

Take a photo of the dash/gauge next time you return a car including the mileage.

When you take the car back, they check the car over and then get you to sign the form that shows damage etc. One of the things on that piece of paper is the fuel level. Do you have a copy of that? If so just send them a copy.

No. It was collected from home when I wasn't there. Family member gave them the keys - no signed form or receipt was offered.

Never had problem with this sort of thing before.
