I have only used Microsoft Security Essentials. No other anti-virus.
And its fine. PC is faster, smoother and cleaner.
    No issues at all.

I also had Microsoft security essentials, and I agree it worked fine but removed it when Microsoft stated that it no longer offers support to Windows XP or Microsoft Security Essentials. So how is it possible that you are still using MSE?
Trying to learn something new every day.

360 total security here - it's free and works well.

Haven't paid for PC security for years. And wouldn't again.

You said 360 Norton free here You say you have not paid for security for years
What are you using at the moment.
I had free security put on my the chap who sorted my desktop. I then got one or two viruses' He used Kaspersky at that time and I had no problems at all.
Thanks for all your input. Like you I don't accept what Norton say about buying from other sources. I do think it was just sales talk.
I have looked at control panel and see the Norton 360 there. I see it says install or uninstall programmes. Would I just click on there ? I only see Norton once on it . Scrolled down to be sure. I am as confused now whether to go free buy Norton or go for another eg Kaspersky. Will sort it out later in the day. Thank you all so much for your advice and input . Sue

I am still using it on Windows 7.
    I am also getting updates.

So even MSE is now no longer supported. ?

Norton had a reputation for being very bloated and slow, but its got far better over the years.

The current product is as good as any other, in terms of system resources, but it still suffers somewhat in terms of more and more things are added, some is marketing, but a lot is more we use the internet for more things and there are more risks.

Take a look at AV-Test.org The current Norton offering is very well rated, and while there are better A/V its very good at hand holding then end user if there is a problem.

Its not the cheapest but before you cut corners bear in mind installing AV may protect you from malware such as cryptolocker that will cost you a lot more to recover from, either in paying the ransom or having to rebuild everything from scratch.

Scaremongering - many products detect cryptolocker, free or otherwise, the money would be better spent on a backup device.

Re the Install/Uninstall, not sure which version of Windows you are using (8 I would guess, as the approach in 7 is slightly different), but I would click Uninstall and see what you get prompted there because it should prompt you to confirm what you want to do.

As far as a replacement package is concerned, I don't know enough about the current versions of other packages to comment in detail and so won't say anything except that I have been very happy with Kaspersky since I ditched Zonealarm (paid for version) as it screwed up my home network NAS access.

However, I also back it up with the free version of Malwarebytes (if you do the same, be careful to select the free version and not sign up for the 30 day trial of the paid-for version as it is bit of a problem to delete that and go back to the free version.!). Also only download from the MalwareBytes home page as I think there are infected versions available from other places!

PS: Anyone running the free Microsoft AV package really should get something a lot better (AVAST, AVG etc.) as the MS package regularly comes flat bottom of those covered in multiple AV comparisons!

    I didn't say otherwise.

My point was Free does not always means good, as jeallen01 noted look how far down tables Microsoft comes. Norton may not be cheap but if you have an inexperienced computer user then all the "big boys" do a far better job of being user friendly.
