I have tried other antivirus but unless you are prepared to pay for them they are next to useless, I will stick with Windows defender it does the job and is completely free, I will try the recommendations suggested when I get time and if that don't work I'll stick with W8.1 as that works perfectly and I ain't really got the time or inclination to keep faffing about trying to upgrade to W10.

Was your W10 an automatic upgrade? Or, did you download it from the Official MS site?
I installed it twice from the official site and second time resolved a few initial niggles.
It may be worth a go.
FWIW Chrome has had problems with W10, usual solution is to reinstall it from scratch with latest version.
By the way, the free versions of Bitdefender and Avast are excellent and far better than Windows Defender.

Now the W10 upgrade is failing completely it won't even start, I'm getting the feeling I should give up completely.

I may do at a later date, but at the moment I have lost my patience with it, so have decided to leave well alone for the time being thanks for any advice that was given.
