So with a bit of tweaking you could get a bit more out of you line than what BT actually say.

i dont disagree with that however the reason bt sets the rate it does is for maximum stability, once you start trying to set it higher theres the possibility of dropped connection etc.

Its not uncommon for speeds to change in terms of profile for each individual line.

But dropping the SNR is risky as it causes more drops in connection, ideally you want a high SNR.

Totally agree with you, It`s not for everyone, I was lucky as i did research of the good and bad points to changing the SNR and also the MTU. I have seen my margin rise a db or 2 during the day but drop back down to 9 or 10 but am still keeping an eye on it even after 2 month of changing it :). What works for some does`nt mean it will work for others..

Like who? This thread is about ADSL on a BT line.

    I didn't say it wasn't !
I didn't say BT were using fibre - or smoke signals !
I didn't say it was the fault of the ISP either, before you say I did - which it might be !

Read what I said, not what I didn't say.

All I was pointing out in my OP was that the link I posted might be of help provided that any comparisons were like with like.

The biggest factor is usually the distance from the exchange. Have a play with this:

    http://www.samknows.com/broadband/index.php

It won't get you any closer, but it might tell you that someone further from the exchange is getting a better speed than you, which might mean you have a cable problem inside or outside of your house - assuming that you are both on BT copper !

Your original post actually says "assuming that you are both on BT copper" so why muddy the waters by bringing "fibre" into the discussion as it's totally irrelevant? Fibre is not used for domestic broadband.

  • Hey moonrakerz, you make a simple, off the cuff and not totally irrelevant remark trying to make a point and out from the woodwork crawl the pedants amongst us:rotfl:
Pointless waste of time arguing with these people.

I had got my "Troll" ready to post, but I really can't be bothered !
  • I was getting 3.9MB some time 5MB, I found an article that involve removing surplus wiring from the extention socket(stops interferance from AM radio signals) and the master as only two wires are required and then I got 4.6 and as much as 6.3MB

Yep it is possible, just reduce the noise on your line & you can see a speed increase!
