Working Fewer Hours

There is always the possibility than if the JC think you are taking the mickey that they'd just have your signing on time clash with your 8 hours a week. As you are clearly capable of working 16 hours and have chosen to work less at a mere 8 hours out of the 168 hours in a week then they may want to see a lot of activity job seeking whilst employed to get your JSA.
I agree with Bo Jangles - wait for a more suitable job and stay put.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

They cannot do this.
They can in principle refuse to make signing on convenient in other ways.
But actually making signing clash with employment is not permitted.
It may well be that 8h/week in some cases may be more lucrative than 16 - if for example it's one shift with no transport costs versus two hours a day with.
And similarly, it may be easier to seek a better additional job to more than make up the difference.0 -
Isnt it dependable on whether op has paid enough ni contributions for the relevant tax years. which if on minimum wage they probably havent.0

They did that with me before, I wanted to do a 4 hour part time course a week and at that point I signed every 2 weeks at like 3.30pm, when I told them I was starting a course and filled in the form, on the spot they told me they wanted me to have a 9am sign on weekly, I did get told by someone after that they do that if they assume you are doing undeclared work I just found it stupid as it meant I had to leave the course but its strange how they want people off benefits then make it hard as possible to do so without being sanctioned.0 -
Wow, thanks for all of the replies!
I think I should clarify. I started this job working a 4-hour contract and generally working 12 hours per week. As I worked my way up, I was given a 16-hour contract and generally worked 30-40 hours per week, I claimed WTC and things were good. With management/staff changes among other things, the job isn't enjoyable any more (I think a lot of people know what I mean, hate the thought of going in). My hours were fluctuating all over and asking for any regularity resulted in my hours getting cut, again. I ended up cancelling the WTC because one week I would be over 30, the next cut way down and it was a nightmare. I tend to get just my contracted hours now.
I don't particularly want to work 8 hours per week, I'd much rather be working full time but I cannot find the work at the moment, the job I mentioned would hopefully be a stop gap until I found more work. I walked around the town centre today and honestly all of the vacancies I found bar one were less than 16 hours, the one that was full time was unsuitable. I would take one of the jobs for less than 16 hours but I didn't know where I would stand with benefits etc. that's why I asked.
I didn't mean to cause arguments!
Thanks.0
