business use? Surely not!

Hi,

I have one permanent place of work but my company does have several other offices. Once in a blue moon I have to go to one of those sites, for a meeting or training session, but it really is rare, probably doesn't amount to even once a month over the last couple of years. Now my insurance company have said I need to pay a extra premium to cover me for "business use" in addition to commuting!!

Surely this can't be right? The odd trip to a different office (still the same company) doesn't make for business use does it?

thanks

  • Yes, I think this probably does count as business use. I do the same and have business use on my policies but I've never found it makes a significant difference to my premiums. You might be better off with another insurer.

Yes it does. Read your policy. Almost certainly specifies travel to single place of work. On my policy adding class 1 makes no difference to the premium.

If your employer is paying you mileage for the use of your vehicle to do your job...even just once a year then yes you need to declare that. I didn't think it made much difference to the premium. How much more do they want?

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
  • Standard practice I'm afraid. All the car policies I've ever had cover commuting as "to one permanent place of work" or words to that effect. Any travelling between or to other places of work requires business use.

I am afraid to say that I also used to be in the same situation as you and had to pay for business use and yes - it was not cheap! I think at the time I was with AVIVA. Fortunately, it does not apply to me anymore and I am back to a standard policy.

Popping to Tescos mid morning at a site 100 miles away? I think they might be wise to that one.

I really don't think this is good advice and certainly not something I would do. Dishonest and risky - never worth it! But each to their own I guess...

It costs me £5 a year so really not worth the risk of commiting insurance fraud.

ok, pretty unanimous, thanks for the quick replies.

Re the wording of the policy then I do only have one permanent place of work, one office with my desk, the others are as I said just ad-hoc for meetings/training. This day and age I'm sure there are millions of people in the same boat.
