Help with Whatsapp

So i've finally been convinced to down load whatsapp, because of course people needed another form of contact for me.

Any way, it says on the app its free to send messages, photos etc, but i'm not sure I believe this is entirely true.

My assumption is it uses wifi when I'm connected or 4g/3g when i'm not using my data plan which when used I will then get charged?

it also says "free" to use abroad? How is it free?

Its free as in they don't charge you, but it uses data so either via your plan or via wifi, Presumambly if you have a 4g phone you have data included? so unless you go over this you wont be charged anything, If abroad and using 3g you would be charged but you can normally get wifi in most places
  • You are correct in that the messages get sent over wifi/data.

If you are abroad, make sure all your data and roaming is switched off and just leave wifi on.

Then when you are in a hotel / bar etc connect to their wifi.

I used whatsapp for the whole 9 months I was travelling, it was great.

this is what I thought. Thank you for confirming, I always turn data off when i'm on holiday, in fact I usually turn my phone off, so I don't plan to use it.

I seem to be one of the rare people who doesn't feel the need to update facebook whilst on holiday.

This is a great app for keeping in touch whilst abroad and off your home network. You can connect wherever you have wifi and effectively keep in contact for free.
We recently took our first child free holiday so was ideal to keep in touch to make sure all was ok, and avoid all of those VERY nasty Egyptian roaming charges!
Well worth it IMO. It's free for the first year after which you pay an annual sub of 79p IIRC.
Oh..and it's not just messages now, they have their own voice service, so effectively calls over wifi for free within the same app.

I've actually found the calling aspect of Whatsapp to be very good, but only have very limited use of Viber so can't really compare.
I think where Whatsapp has the edge of Viber is the larger customerbase and visibility. A lot of my friends/family use Whatsapp, whereas very few of them would have even heard of Viber.
Horses for courses though - they both do very similar things. One being better than the other..well, I think that 'better' is very subjective.
Such a shame that the apps aren't interoperable so that the individual could use the one that's best for them, but still retain the contactability/connectivity with the others.

I personally find that with Viber
The voice call quality was rubbish
There are too many bells and whistles in the 'text' bit
    I get loads of spam

Don't know why I haven't uninstalled it really!!

    :)
