Pls suggest good areas in/around London to buy property

Hi,

I am living in slough and the property prices here are quite ok, but I want to move closer to London (actually a tube line) so that I can commute to work in central london easily. (Commuting from slough means paying a big chunk for national rail fares). Can you pls suggest more areas like slough, where properties are not so expensive, but also closer to commute to london.

Depends on your budget & what sort of place you are after, & where you need to commute to. More specifics please.

Hi...thanks for ur reply. Budget would be between 250-300k(2 bedroom, preferably house, rather than a flat). Need to commute to Piccadilly Circus. At this budget, slough offers 2-3 bedroom houses & flats. Where else, like slough, can I look for property, which is also like 30-40 mts commute to Central London by Tube(with no rail commute).

    Thanks
  • Acton or Hanwell are pretty good spots. Maybe Brentford but wherever you look you will have to change a few times on the tube.

  • Hi there

Does it absolutley have to be on a tube line? Obviously you will find great differences in prices around London, but having done it myself here is my input!

I know I live there but I can recommend Purley. I know it's Croydon, but it is a nice area, and you get a "croydon discount" on the prices - for example:

    http://www.findaproperty.com/displayprop.aspx?edid=00&salerent=0&pid=211728&agentid=09523

I know you may want to have the tube on your doorstep and that is fair enough, but from this area the mainline trains take about 20mins to get to Victoria and 25 mins to London Bridge. For a Z1-6 card it will be about £160 per month. The countryside is a 5 minute drive to the south, and although it is most definatley 24 carrat suburbia we have found everybody very friendly and are so centrally located we don't need to go to town except for work (although if we wanted to it would be easy). You would be right in thinking that Croydon itself can be a bit of a hole but tbh that is london for you - good areas next to bad ones. It may not be the kind of place you are looking to live in, but I would never personally go back to having a small place next to a tube station - give me the nice garden and quiet (must be getting old!). Cetainly have a look at some of those zone 5/6 areas without the tube, generally the overground is faster anyway.

    Best of luck
  • yup.. hanwell/Acton/Ealing/northfield.. is a good option, got tube line to center london, around 40 min on tube from Northfield station to Picadili Circuse(I was working in Soho before, therefore know the exact time), or alternative, take hanwell main line to go to Paddington in 15 minutes. Persumely Ealing is an ideal option, however, would be difficult for your budget. We were looking at Ealing, hanwell, even brentford since April. It's not easy, 280k-300k can get you descent 1-bed flat with garden, or 2-bed flat without garden in Northfield, or around ealing broadway. same amount can get you 2-bed flat with garden/garage in olde hanwell(near canal walk, south part of Uxbridge road, 4-min bus to Boston Manor station on Picadily line) Again, same price, 280-300k, can get you 2/3 bed house in hanwell (north part of Uxbridge road), no tube, lots of bus link to Ealing broadway, however, walking distance to hanwell trainline, which is 15 min to Paddington station. It's still very convinient, and good value for money. However, need to be caucious when you view houses around there, there are some council/ex council houses around(VERY OBVIOUS, YOU CAN'T MISS THEM). Brentford ? Not convinient, generally similar price as hanwell.. I personall don't like it.. just .. hm.... those abandoned industrial sites, give me bad/insecure feelings..

Good luck, if you need any more information around this area, I am glad to help... living here for 2.5 yrs, pretty familiar with the locaiton.

Tooting. You'll just about get a 2 bed terraced house in Tooting for £250k. For £300k you might get a 3 bed place. The northern line goes straight up to Leicester Square and is a pretty good service (for Britain).

Tooting's also gotta be a pretty good bet to be the next place to be gentrified, trapped as it is between Wimbledon (ish) and Balham, Gateway to the South.

Define "Like Slough"... I rent in Bermondsey, but if you're after buying and want a short commute to that part of the centre, what's your trade-off between price, time commuting and how nice the area is?

There's some good value to be had between Stratford and Leytonstone which is more house-y than flat-y, or even further out - the central line would get you to Tottenham Court Road which is a 500 yard walk at the other end (or change at Holborn).

The area around Hounslow would get you straight in pretty fast. If you want to be more central and don't mind a, er, "vibrant" area (and in most of Slough you probably don't) then Finsbury Park's worth a bet, it could gentrify (well, could) but might already be slightly beyond your budget.

If you want to be very central but not spend too much (it's relative...), Elephant and Castle (or some nicer bits of Walworth near it) might just come in within budget and would have you at work within a quarter of an hour.

But there we are. Get a day ticket and have a look around!
Hurrah, now I have more thankings than postings, cheers everyone!
