Gas leak from new cooker

  • A gas leak is a gas leak and you were right to inform the national grid.
Until its been inspected you cant ascertain if it was the installers fitting onto the cooker or the internal pipe work inside the cooker. I split a cheap ovens fitting a few years ago, but obviously it got picked up in a gas test. Nice to know how you got on.

  • Hi Mike, well Argos sent round an engineer who couldn't find a fault with the oven at all! He took it apart, spent a substantial amount of time testing it, and couldn't find a problem with it at all. The hissing noise that I'd been hearing was the oven's ventilation. The smell of gas that both myself and a neighbour smelt was....erm, paranoia probably?!! He criticised the man from National Grid for incorrectly informing me that I had a gas leak.

It's quite strange. You would have thought if there was one thing National Grid would get right it would be to ascertain whether or not there is a gas leak.

#33 Truth is you may never really know the truth of what happened. Grid have no hidden agenda. They dont represent any manufacturer of appliances, they dont work for a retailer, they dont get any pay or bonus related to whether they find or dont find anything wrong. There are definite prescribed systems of work and procedures for checking for leaks.

Two separate individuals smelled gas..how could that be..we may never know. NG comments on Argos/cooker fitter, cooker fitter comments on NG.. You could just as easily speculate that Argos man found problem, fixed it and to cover up his colleagues and employer, he said nothing was wrong..
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

The gas engineer that Argos sent round was tutting away, seemingly unimpressed with National Grid's assessment, commenting that instead of doing a thorough check, it was probably easier for him to deem it unsafe and that he was probably in a hurry to get home or whatever. However, I saw both engineers test the oven with their gadgets, and both showed me how the gadget was indicating that there was/wasn't a gas leak.

Anyway it must be safe, because I've been using the gas cooker ever since and I'm still here!

#35 I believe NG did the right thing. Their remit is not to dismantle/examine appliances but to simply make safe by disconnecting a possibly affected appliance or to disconnect the whole installation. That is what he did. It is then for the owner of the apparatus to institute further checks with a Gas Safe Registered person.

NG Staff are not really in a hurry to "get home". Every bit of their day to day existence is closely monitored and there are no drivers for anyone to rush.

    Still,alls well that ends well..
