Never had a problem with their strawberries but I don't like their tomatoes, they are always a bit too soft for my liking.
I think it's like any other shop in that you need to choose wisely.
I don't have a problem with the tomatoes as I rarely eat them raw so for cooking they're fine.
I've no idea what the poster can have found wrong with the bananas. I like the size of them and they always have green ones that I prefer.
There was a problem with onions a while back but that seems resolved now.
Only last week I was in a local greengrocer and the parsnips looked decidedly manky.
It's not peculiar to Aldi.0 -
I dont think it is possible to compare the quality of fruit and veg across shop chains. For every post that says fruit from X is rubbish , you will get another that says it is great.
The supply chain and instore handling/ stock control will be different in every store depending on local factors and store management, and as has been said above it only takes a very small change to make a great deal of difference.
Only way you are going to find the best is to pay a visit to each of your options a couple of times and judge for yourself - but also not just assume that because it has been good/bad in the past that it will always be that way0 -
been hit & miss recently with fruit , ha same strawberry problem ok when bought on the saturday and put them in the fridge when i got home , by sunday morning one had mould on it
bought some nectarines as well and all ok when bought but by monday one had developed mould
also has a problem with Lidl cherries when they were on offer for £2.
99kg bought about £2.50 worth as good price and within a couple days they were leaking and going bad so ended up salvaging as many as we could and cooking up for a cherry pie"If I know I'm going crazy, I must not be insane"0 -
The quality of fruit and veg is one the reasons I struggle to join the 'Aldi/Lidl are brilliant' camp. I've tried a number of different stores in different areas and I find the fruit and veg just don't last - and it's not me/my fridge as I can buy the same things from other supermarkets and not have the same problems. We eat loads of fruit and veg, I work so I don't have time to shop every day and I just can't afford to buy a week's worth and end up either binning half of it or having to cook/freeze it all within a day or so. I'm quite happy to buy 'value' and mis-shapen stuff (in fact much of what I do buy comes from the value ranges) but I've just continually found that the greengrocery from Aldi and Lidl is such poor quality that it doesn't work out any cheaper when you work out the cost of the bits you actually can eat - something might look like it's really cheap per kilo but if you throw away half of it then you've doubled the cost.0

As I said above - For everyone that says store X are rubbish , someone else will say they are great.
I am in the "havent had any problems with fruit & veg from Lidl or Aldi" camp.0 -

We have two Lidl's near us, the nearer in a C-D social area the other vey definitely an A area. We used the nearer one because it was close to Aldi & Asda which made for an easy 3 visit shop but we were none too impressed with Lidl it was obviously a cheap shop. Milk was much older than say Tesco and the fruit and Veg had to be chosen carefully. We have recently been going to the other one, which is very different, and I can fully understand why some find them rubbish and some have no problems.
But, is the difference between branches due to manager, area or some other factor? The only thing that is constant is change.0 -

The problem I have is that I've tried a number of branches of Aldi and Lidl - in Wiltshire, where I currently live, in SW and SE London, where I've lived previously, and in Derbyshire, where my family are from - and I've had problems with the fruit and veg in all of them. I think that Aldi and Lidl tend to buy the lower quality fruit and veg from the wholesalers. That in itself isn't necessarily a problem but if it's combined with poor handling and storage and perhaps not very fast turnover in the stores then you do get issues of it just not lasting and being a bit nasty. I find Aldi and Lidl just aren't great for fresh stuff - it's the same when they get plants in, if you can get there on the day the stuff is delivered then you're generally ok, but after a few days the stuff often isn't worth buying as it's just not been looked after.0 -
I think it can be the way the stores are run.
I have 2 Aldi's withen a 1 1/2 mile walk from where I live.
1 store is OK. Well looked after. Stock rotates.
The other is abit more disorganized. Can't put my finger on it but I don't like this one compared to the other. The more I live, the more I learn.
The more I learn, the more I grow.
The more I grow, the more I see.
The more I see, the more I know.
The more I know, the more I see,
How little I know.!!0
