Poor quality of aldi fruit

We don't have an aldi nearby but made the trip yesterday to do a big shop.

Bought a punnet of strawberries and by lunchtime today they were inedible. Half were mouldy and the rest were all squishy and horrible. The chickens enjoyed them though!

The prices there are obviously a lot cheaper but if the fruit goes off that quickly it's not really worth it. Or am I just unlucky?

Only thing I ever have a problem with is carrots, but they are fine if kept in the salad drawer of the fridge.

I think you have just picked up a dodgy container - I always check my fruit for bruising where ever I shop.

I find you need to check soft fruits for most places carefully when buying them. It doesn't take much for a dodgy berry in the middle of the punnet to spread mould quickly to the rest. Drop an email to their CS dept to let them know, you never know, they might reimburse you.

Thanks. I won't give up on the cheaper supermarkets just yet then.

I always check them carefully, but like you say one dodgy berry you don't notice and suddenly you've got a big mush of inedible soft fruit.

It does put me off when a lot of their stuff doesn't have dates on though. How are you supposed to pick the freshest items?

Also don't buy from the top.

    The fresher food is underneath.

There is a date code on the product.

Should look like something like '2606'.

26 is the week. 06 is the day it should come off display. 06 is Saturday.

Date and Day codes reset from Monday.

Some really good tips thanks robin. I just went to check on the empty packet and it says 3101 so I guess it should have been fine until today.

Will fire off a quick email to customer services. I'd have taken them back if the store wasn't over 10 miles away.

Cyantist glad to be of help.

Must admit I scratched my head over the produce dating system at first until I figured it out.

Bought a couple of punnets of nectarines today. Delicious!

  • I bought a packet of the nectarines on Friday. They felt a little firm but after a couple of days in the fruit bowl they were perfect for eating. Lovely and juicy. Never had a problem with their strawberries but I don't like their tomatoes, they are always a bit too soft for my liking.
