Just because it hasn't been mentioned - these Android TV boxes can be used for many legal and illegal purposes. Watching Sky Movies that you're not paying for - that's illegal, not moneysaving...
Unfortunately, it isn't actually illegal at present. The European Court of Justice last year ruled that viewing copyrighted material online was not a crime, providing that you were not also copying (computer caching doesn't count as copying, according to the ruling, due to its temporary nature) or redistributing it.
The case in question involved a company called Meltwater. This company was collating news articles and passing them on to end-users to view online. In the United Kingdom, the NLA (Newspaper Licencing Agency) brought suit against them, and as part of that suit argued that all end-users of the service should also have paid for the content they had been able to view.
Originally the High Court and Court of Appeal found in favour of the NLA. After going as far as the UK Supreme Court, the Supreme Court found in Meltwater's favour (who were represented by the PRCA - Public Relations Consultants Association) ruling end-users had broken no laws and were not liable to be charged for the content they'd viewed.
The Supreme Court then referred the matter to the European Court of Justice who agreed with the Supreme Court's decision and, as far as the EU is currently concerned, it is not illegal for an end-user to view copyrighted material providing that material is online. Meltwater do now have to pay licencing fees for the content they use, however, and this ruling does not make it legal to host without permission, or make available to others copyrighted material.
Personally, I am very much against that ruling but it is what it is for now.0 -
Its not illegal, probably illegal to share or copy for profit but not illegal to stream and privately viewNo. The websites providing the streams may be illegal or breaching copyright, the watching of the streams is not.
(plus Tropez's post)
Yes, sorry I should have clarified that it's the 'sharer' that's breaking copyright, not the 'viewer' but the viewer certainly risks losing a stream at any point in time, and should not view them as being reliable.
Buying one expecting all the Sky channels for free isn't a good idea IMHO.0 -

If they play the game whack-a-mole and remove one site another one will just pop up again elsewhere.:footie:Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

When you get one, you won't bother trying to watch Sky's film channels using it because there are so many streams offering far more recent films.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0
