Does anyone know about the legality of this fee?
Although I don't pay by Direct Debit, I do pay using the banks' system - BACS - which transfers amounts direct to BT using exactly the same method as Direct Debit. I don't send cheques.

Welcome the the MSE forums Justjeff.
This whole matter has been the subject of much discussion since BT announced it was to be introduced.
Martin himself started one - http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=400053 and there are now 193 posts on that!Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0
