What's happened
You may have read in the papers, that BT is going to charge those who don't pay by Direct Debit more than others. Actually it already does that, the gap is just getting bigger.
The Details.
Currently line rental costs £11 for those that pay via direct debit and £12 for those that pay by any other means. Now those who pay without direct debit will pay £12.50
Why use BT?
While BT itself isn't competitive, using it for line rental means you can access override providers such as those detailed in the Callchecker (always worth making six cheap calls a quarter via BT itself though, so you don't have to pay for its voicemail).
This means if you can, switch your payment to direct debit before 1 May.
More details on telephone costs see the cheapest home phones article.

They are also charging for caller display which used to be free and for 1571 unless you make 2 calls a month through them then both are free.0

Hi Folks... Does anyone know if it will also cost extra if I use the BT Payment card. This is actaully better than DD as I pay a little each week then when the bill arrives it's all paid off.
If they charge me for paying early I will be complainging big time!!!
Cheers...The art is not in making money, but in keeping it!!!0 -
Yes the caller display is another BT rip-off. I rang (India) and the chap refunded the amount charged, as I didn't ask for it and anyway I don't have a phone that displays numbers!0

OTOH, BT's a far nicer headline than that nice Richard Branston.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -

Help, I'm confused!
Are they charging those who pay by Direct Debit more than others or less?Just off the border of your waking mind, there lies another time ....0 -
I am charged £5 per month by Virgin. For years I have paid an amount fortnightly, via internet banking, to them and have always been in credit. I just don't get it! Always in credit and still charged £5
I am loathed to go the DD route as in the past I have had numerous disputes with NTL over billing (overcharged). Can I set up a DD and still continue to pay in advance i.e. they will have nothing to bill me for and in doing that lose the £5 per month charge??

Unfortunately yes they will charge you. My mum uses this method and is usually in credit and they inform me that they will still be charging. Hope this answers your question0
