The reality is since it was a gift, the lady was perfectly legally entitled to keep it, so anything he gets is a bonus.

Surely part of that is refundable?

Since he's likely to realise 10% (or less) of the original retail cost if he sells the ring, he might do best keeping it and hoping that any future fiance has similar sized fingers (or get it re-sized).

Every time I've tried to sell jewellery, only the scrap value of the metal is taken into account.

The jewel/s aren't taken into account even if they're worth thousands.

The OP's friend needs to find someone who specialises in gemstones and, even then, the secondhand value is horrible.
 Don't know what I'm doing, but doing it anyway...

I thought most suppliers were just paid a deposit, with the full amount due a few weeks before the wedding? 15k is tons of money to lose!

I would suggest he keeps it and at some point in the future he could have it made into something else. I get that it's a raw time and he just wants rid but as everyone has said, second hand jewellry, especially engagement and wedding rings, don't fetch anything like their value (let's face it would you want your fiance buying you a second hand ring?).

Best put it away somewhere, concentrate on getting his head back and look at it when there's less emotion involved.

Think of the money they've saved on a wedding. :)

Hahahaha..you see ex coppers and people like me who have spent a lifetime with the public always have a more cynical and i might say, more realistic take on situations !

Its true,,give it 10 years or more and he could have lost half a house, half a pension, had his kids turned against him, lost hair and gained weight and wrinkles with worry..

Always look on the bright side of life,,ta da..

Tell him to try an flog it on ebay or similar to some other poor soul..
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

I sold a platinum engagement ring with three diamonds bought for over two grand. Got £623 on ebay. WAY MORE than all the jewellers I went to quoted me (local and in Hatton Garden).
