Selling an engagement ring

A good friend of mine's engagement has been called off.
She has returned the ring to him, and I've offered to sell it on for him so he doesn't need to deal with the emotion attached to such a task.

Can anyone suggest good places to check? I know I could take it to jewellers, but I was wondering if people knew of dealers who offer a good price.

It was purchased for £3,750 late last year, so hoping for something upwards of £3,250 (just so you know the price range being dealt with).

Thanks in advance guys.

I don't think you'll get anything like that sort of money for it. Second hand jewellery plummets in value - think more like 50% of original cost!

To be honest you're not going to be able to achieve anything like that figure. Even half of the original purchase price may be optimistic. Are the stones certified as this may make it more saleable?

Yeah, I set his expectations but didn't want to push it too much seeing as it was only a week ago haha.

    Fully certified.

Was it purchased from a high street chain or a manufacturing jeweller?

There is a jewellers near me that sells previously enjoyed jewellery for around 50% of the value and they need to make something on it too and they get them cleaned up so he will be lucky to get 30-40% of what he paid for it.

Might have more luck with a sob story and pics on ebay but then again it might put people off it they feel it is jinxed. Do you have any pics or a description of the style and it might be easier to suggest something if it is a really popular style.

I sold some of my jewellery. It was no where near as expensive as the piece you mention. However I think I paid about £350 but only got £80 from the jewellers.

Has he had it long? Would the retailer do a credit note for something else if he has the receipt?

Not such good news. I believe Beaverbrooks provide their own certificates as opposed to the internationally recognised one's such as GIA. Stone quality is also pretty low, especially in relation to the price charged.

I took a ring to sell. Recent insurance vert of £10k- had cost about £5k a number of years before. Was offered £600 and specialist jewellery auction reckoned it would get £800. Apparently giant rubies are out of fashion and the only value was in the diamonds and platinum. Wasn't mine luckily.

Will beaverbrooks offer a store credit? Partial swap? It may worth more to them than just the scrap value it's worth to most other jewellers
