if everyone replaced the word cloud with nosey and potentially chatty and untrustworthy neighbour with the ability to easily compile a dossier of your life, movements and friends from all those gps encoded timestamped photo's , maybe they'd think twice about the conveniences of the 'cloud'. And all clouds evaporate or expire or mess up eventually, then you're left with nothing.

Little point having all that storage available on a modern pc/laptop/hard disk, if it remains empty, all you need then is a backup device, £30-35/terabyte from pc world or the like is the going rate. It would take a considerable number of jpg's to fill a modern capacity hard disk.

I do have over 1,000 photos stored on an external server (paid for storage) that I can log onto via PC, tablet or phone. However I have those and many more stored on multiple hard drives. External companies go bust or have major technical failures, hard drives fail. The only option is to have multiple copies, on multiple devices, including at least one copy stored in a different physical location. I don't use the external site for photos of friends and family (just depends how paranoid you wish to be).

All true. But nobody cares about privacy nowadays and they lap up the "targeted" adverts! (Not to mention the sensationalised lies they call "The News".)

I keep "Mills & Boon" eBooks and cake recipes in my "Cloud" accounts, together with cute photos of rabbits. ;)

I am not so happy now though. I downloaded two at a time to send a dozen by email. Then I tried another way, and rt clicked on a photo, and copied it's address and sent that. I now feel that the recipient will be able to access them all. Is this so. I changed password. Because I found it frustratingly slow, am considering going back to picasa on all three.

That's pretty good, I guess lots of people will use this for holidays etc. Remember it's purely optional.
You can either continue imagining that Google etc. employ thousands of people to watch screens and see what you are doing minute by minute (You should be so interesting). Or, you can embrace the technology and use it to your advantage.
