More than likely they will but in the meantime are you driving your car with your cherished plate on that is now in retention and not linked to any vehicle. If you go past a police car or dvla anpr system it will pick up the car is on false plates and you could get the book thrown at you.

I'm curious how far the "book throwing" could go, given that I have a print out from the dvla that says wait until I get the V5C and then get plates made up. When the V5C does arrive, I can have it with me and be on the way to Halfords.

Although it shouldn't make a difference, a middle aged woman pootling along at 30mph on local roads with a clean driving licence, no criminal record having followed the dvla guidance to the letter..I doubt I would get more than a reminder to sort it from a policeman.

Well that is up to you. Just making you aware of the law. Police might be more interested in getting the £1000 fine off you though.

Most insurance companies understand the retention and swap over procedure and if they charge will only charge you once, after you explain the situation to them.

You have to contact them about cover for the new car anyway so it can all be done at the same time.

Thanks for this. I suggested that as a gesture of goodwill they should only charge once and they agreed. So I paid £25 to change the insurance to the new car from the collection date and I just ring up to tell them when it has the cherished plate on it.

Old car, still on cherished plate, will be driven locally only tomorrow and to the dealer next week, aside from that it will be on the driveway.

The advice from the government's own website says you should get the plates changed over 'as soon as possible' (i.e. not 'immediately') and says if you don't have the original plates you should wait for the V750. If you have a print out of that with you, it will be a very harsh policeman who would risk a court case where you have the defence of following the DVLA guidelines to the letter, and show him this at the time.

Also, although I have no inside knowledge of how the system works, I can't believe that the cherished number is somehow 'not linked to any vehicle' once it is on retention. Presumably there is a tag on that number in the database which links to any vehicles it has been assigned to. It would be a trivial matter for the police to check the number and cross-reference it to the actual vehicle and owner.
If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.

Thank you. The voice of reason.

I have the V5C with the cherished number on it, so it can be seen that it belonged to the car and a print out of the transfer to a retention that is dated. So even if the database doesn't link, I can prove the link.
