No. I didn't want to put anyone in the position of doing something illegal.

  • It's not illegal, the rules say you must have proof. That could be a page on a website.

The website lists the documents that are acceptable as proof and I don't have any of them. The page that is shown after paying the £80 transfer costs says to wait until the V5C arrives, so it must be an acceptable practice if they are saying to wait.

Dealers sometimes get it right! The last time my wife changed her car, she told them that she wanted the personal plate transferred, and when we arrived to collect the new car, there were her old car and the new one next to each other in the car park, identical cars, identical registrations, slightly different shades of blue. I took a photo :) I don't recall any hassle other than making the request and perhaps signing something during one of the visits to the dealer to arrange.

I took my own personal number off my car this morning via the DVLA website. It took literally seconds, and as I had the old plates already, the car had its new number plates and insurers informed within 10 minutes. Very pleased with the service.
If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.

The problem is that I don't have old plates as my current car was registered from new with my personal plate.

By the time they would arrive in the post, via Ebay or wherever else online, the V5C will have arrived and I can get them made officially.

Within the last year I've bought plates online (legal font, spacing, reflectivity and footer information) from platesforcars.co.uk, showplatesdirect.com and autostyle-parts.com (the latter via their ebay shop). None required me to send them my V750 and all arrived within a few working days of the order being placed.

Platesforcars was probably the cheapest-looking in terms of quality of finish, showplatesdirect was better but were overpriced, and Autostyle did a high quality pressed metal plate (took about 3 days to arrive) which would have been my overall preference although were unable to offer the Euro GB symbol on a short plate and I didn't really like the orangey-yellow hue of their rear number plate.

But long story short, it is very easy to find people producing plates that meet the legal standards for display and who don't require you to send them physical documentation or wait for them to take an age to prepare and post them. Via ebay, amazon and simple web searches you'll find loads.

I just phoned the franchised dealer I am buying from. They said not to waste my money getting plates made up as they will put their (logo'd I assume) plates on the car when they get it.

  • More than likely they will but in the meantime are you driving your car with your cherished plate on that is now in retention and not linked to any vehicle. If you go past a police car or dvla anpr system it will pick up the car is on false plates and you could get the book thrown at you.
