Advice needed about repair of sony mobile

My first thread on here although I have "lurked"for years! I really would be grateful of some advice.
I started a 24month phone & sim monthly Three contract for my son in Nov 2013. He has been having problems with the Sony xperia mobile shutting down when he is using it. He went into Three shop & they said to contact Sony the manufacturer about repair as it is still under warranty. So he phoned them & they said they would send a courier to collect the phone which did not happen so he had to post the mobile instead. Now he has a quotation for about £190 to fix some scrapes etc on the cover & screen as they say the phone has to be brought back to original appearance so that warranty is valid before thry consider the shutting down problem. If he wants the phone back he has to pay them about £20 delivery & handling. If he does not want phone returned they will recycle . We emailed back to say that the scrapes are not affecting it & he is not bothered by them just the shutting down but they are not budging.
Personnaly I think this is Sony trying to wriggle out of performing a warranty repair & at the same time squeeze more money out of us. Before I try to contact them again I would really appreciate some advice. Thank you all

One you have two repair choices .
Manufactures warranty subject to their terms and conditions . Its usual for warranty to be rejected of damaged etc .
Sale Of Goods Act against the vendor here 3 as the vendor are responsible . However as the product is more than 6 monthsd old you would need to prove the fault is inherant / product not fit for purpose etc .For this you would need an independent enginners report proving the problem under SOGA and claim against the vendor .0 -
Thanks for taking the time to reply. It is nice to have a different viewpoint. I realise the phone is more than 6 months old but it surprises me that they did not even indicate if the shutting down problem would be covered by warranty if we spent all that money to have the minor scratches fixed or even quote for said work. I also find it annoying that they will charge over £20 for returning the phone. Checking out Royal Mail indicates that it would cost half that. I have to csll in to the Three shop later so I will have another cgat with them.
